Bual Madeira 'Heritage Collection'
95 Points - Vinous
PLEASE ALLOW 10 DAYS FOR DELIVERY

This 2020 special release of the 1920 Blandy's Bual Madeira marks 100 years of ageing in American oak casks and glass demijohns, with only 1,199 bottles available. This centennial wine is noted for its complex aroma, rich concentration, balanced sweetness, and long, refined aftertaste.

At the start of the 20th century, global instability led to a sharp decline in wine exports, heavily impacting Madeira wine due to the Great War, the Russian Revolution, and US Prohibition. Despite these challenges, the 1920 Bual became an iconic wine, showcasing the resilience of Madeira’s winemakers.

Bual, Madeira

Madeira Bual is typically sweeter than Madeira Sercial or Madeira Verdelho, but not quite as intensely sweet as Malmsey. You should expect a light mahogany/copper coloured wine with aromas of maple syrup, roasted walnut notes and hints of coffee. On the palate its high acidity will create a much needed balance against the sweetness making the sugar barely noticeable. Flavours of figs, vanilla and caramel should dominate the palate and the wine should finish off long with caramelised citrus notes.

Blandys, 1880

Malmsey Madeira

Malmsey (also known as Malvasia or Malvazia) has its fermentation halted when its sugars are between 3.5 and 6.5° Baumé. This style of wine is characterised by its dark colour, rich texture, and coffee-caramel flavours. Like other Madeiras made from the noble grape varieties, the Malvasia grape used in Malmsey production has naturally high levels of acidity in the wine, which balances with the high sugar levels so the wines do not taste cloyingly sweet.

Malmsey Solera 1863 Madeira

Bottled by Edward Young and Co London.

**Blandy’s 1863 Malmsey Madeira Solera** is one of the most extraordinary and historically significant wines ever released from the island of Madeira. Initiated in 1863, this solera represents the pinnacle of Malmsey (Malvasia) Madeira — the richest and most luscious of the island’s fortified wine styles. Produced by Blandy’s, a family deeply rooted in Madeira’s winemaking legacy since 1811, this wine embodies over a century of careful ageing and tradition. Few wines in the world can match its pedigree, age, and the sheer depth of character it has developed over time.

Boal Solera 1826

1826: the year Thomas Jefferson, wine enthusiast, passed away. On 5 April, 2014, noted Madeira specialist Richard Mason wrote of this wine: “One of a set of solera wines released in the 1950s and 1960s. This was probably bottled between 1956 and 1960 and is based on the 1836 Campanário that Walter Grabham left to the Blandy family on his death in 1955. Deep mahogany colour; rich smoky nose, autumnal bonfires and a touch of forest floor; rich lemon and lime marmalade with lovely mouthfeel and texture, leading to a delicate marmalade finish. ”
