Description

Tasting Notes The 2015 Sandeman Vintage Port Wine is a deep ruby in colour. On the nose, aromas of ripe and juicy blackberries, black cherries, strawberries and plums are married with subtle spicy notes and floral hints. On the palate, firm but ripe tannins and a lively acidity carry the sumptuous flavours onto the lingering finish.

LBVs present a selection of very fine full bodied red ports from a single year. The fundamental difference between the two styles lies in the way each is matured. Vintage port is kept in wood for only twenty months or so before being transferred to the bottle where it will continue to age. Late bottled vintage, as the name suggests, is bottled later, remaining in wood between four and six years. During this relatively long period of wood ageing, an LBV matures and settles down - it is ready to drink when bottled, does not need to be decanted and can be served by the glass for several weeks after the cork is drawn. Late Bottled Vintage port was developed as a high quality but more affordable and immediately drinkable alternative to vintage port to be enjoyed by the glass on everyday occasions.

Serving Tips & Storage This port is unfiltered and will need to be decanted to remove sediment. Serve at room temperature on its own or with steak and blue cheese sauce or vintage mature blue cheeses such as stilton Cashel Blue, Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Saint Augur Blue. This is also great with chocolate - a flattering accompaniment to top quality hand-made chocolates and artisan chocolate bars. Please store on its side in a cool dark space away from heat and light.

***91/100 Mark Squires, The Wine Advocate 2019***
The 2015 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a blend of 43% Touriga Franca, 29% Touriga Nacional, 20% Tinta Roriz and 8% Tinta Barroca. It was bottled in May 2019 after four years, unfiltered and with a long cork. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar. Sogrape's three traditional LBVs are all very fine this issue, but this seems to be the sharpest and most powerful. Like its siblings, it could use a better expression of fruit, which will only come with time. In the meanwhile, the power seems to be at a Vintage Port level, although not the top level. This is potentially super, and it should age very well. There were 5,570 cases produced.
