The 1955 Barolo from Castellana is a remarkable example of mid-century winemaking from Piedmont’s golden era. Produced in one of the most highly regarded vintages of the 1950s, this wine captures the enduring nobility of Nebbiolo in its most traditional form — austere in youth, but transformed by time into a model of grace and complexity.

In the glass, it displays a translucent brick-garnet hue with orange and amber highlights that reflect its long evolution. The nose is hauntingly mature, unfolding layers of dried rose, cherry compote, cedar, and worn leather, followed by subtle tones of truffle, forest floor, and spice-box warmth. Each swirl reveals a new fragment of its history.

On the palate, the wine is silky and fully resolved, yet still alive with fine acidity that gives definition to flavours of dried red fruit, tobacco leaf, balsamic herbs, and earthy minerality. The finish is long and harmonious, tapering gently into notes of sweet spice and faded florals.

The 1955 vintage is celebrated as one of Barolo’s truly great years — a season that yielded wines of balance, structure, and extraordinary longevity. Castellana’s expression of it stands as a window into a vanished era of Piedmontese craftsmanship, when patience and tradition defined the character of every bottle.
