  • Description

This refined 1996 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Couchereaux from Burgundy is a single-vineyard Premier Cru wine that highlights the elegance and ageing potential of Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir. The cool, balanced 1996 vintage produced reds with firm acidity and fine structure, allowing this cru to develop beautifully over nearly three decades.

    Tasting Notes
Pale garnet with brick reflections, this mature Pinot Noir opens with delicate aromas of dried cherry, raspberry, forest floor, and rose petals, layered with notes of sous-bois, truffle, and a touch of spice. The palate is medium-bodied, silky, and precise, with flavours of redcurrant, cranberry, and savoury earth balanced by bright acidity. The finish is elegant and long, showing classic Côte de Beaune finesse and maturity. Drinking beautifully now.

    Serving and Food Pairing
Serve lightly cool at 15–16°C. Decant gently to remove sediment but avoid prolonged exposure to preserve aromatics. Ideal pairings include coq au vin, roast duck, or herb-crusted lamb. Vegetarian matches include wild mushroom risotto, beetroot tart, or baked Camembert. Mature cheeses such as Époisses or Comté make a fine accompaniment.

    Winemaking
Clos des Couchereaux is a well-regarded Premier Cru vineyard near Beaune, known for its stony, limestone-rich soils that produce Pinot Noir with fine structure and minerality. In 1996, careful vineyard management and traditional vinification in open vats were followed by maturation in French oak barrels, a proportion of them new, enhancing depth and complexity while allowing the terroir to shine.

Beaune 1er Cru wines are renowned for their balance of fruit and finesse, often capable of long ageing. Clos des Couchereaux is particularly admired for producing wines that evolve with grace, showcasing Burgundy’s hallmark delicacy and complexity.

    How to store your Wine
Store bottles lying on their side in a cool, dark cellar (10–14°C). At nearly 30 years of age, this wine is at its peak and best enjoyed now, though well-cellared bottles may continue to show elegance for another 2–3 years.
