1975 Cannonau di Sardegna – Cantina Sociale Oliena (Sardinia, Italy)

A rare, fully mature Cannonau (Grenache) from the Nuoro hills, showing the warm, aromatic soul of Sardinia at graceful tertiary maturity. Brick-garnet with a broad tawny rim, it opens on sweet-dried cherry and strawberry, macchia mediterranea (wild herbs), orange peel and rose, with notes of cedar, leather, almond and a gentle balsamic/iodine hint. The palate is mid-weight and silken: mellow red fruit, dried fig and herbal spice ride on lively, old-school acidity; tannins are fine and resolved, giving a tapering, savoury finish of cherry skin, blood orange and dried thyme.

Producer note: Cantina Sociale di Oliena (renowned for “Nepente di Oliena”) gathers growers on the granite slopes around Oliena, crafting traditional, herb-scented Cannonau that ages into perfume and finesse rather than heft.

Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; very gentle decant for sediment just before pouring.
Food pairing: Roast lamb with rosemary, suckling pig (porceddu), pecorino sardo, grilled tuna or aubergine with herbs.
