Description
This classic 1995 Château Tour Saint-Bonnet from the Médoc, Cru Bourgeois, is a fine example of the estate’s robust, traditionally styled Bordeaux. Known for producing age-worthy wines that punch well above their classification, Tour Saint-Bonnet’s gravel and clay soils north of Saint-Estèphe favour Cabernet Sauvignon, giving structure and longevity, supported by Merlot’s supple fruit.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet with a brick-tinged rim, the 1995 Tour Saint-Bonnet opens with aromas of cassis, black cherry, cedar, and tobacco, along with earthy hints of leather and spice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with firm but resolved tannins, flavours of dark fruit, graphite, and savoury herbs. The finish is long and classic, showing the structure of a fine Left Bank vintage now softened by three decades of maturity. Drinking beautifully now.
Serving and Food Pairing
Serve at 16–18°C after 30–45 minutes of decanting. A superb match for roast beef, lamb chops, or venison. For vegetarian pairings, try lentil stew, grilled portobello mushrooms, or aubergine dishes. Mature hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère also complement its earthy, savoury profile.
Winemaking
The 1995 vintage in Bordeaux was excellent, producing structured, ripe wines with real ageing potential. At Tour Saint-Bonnet, the blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Traditional vinification in concrete vats is followed by maturation in large oak foudres, a style that preserves the wine’s firm Médoc character and makes it especially age-worthy.
Château Tour Saint-Bonnet has a long history dating back to the 16th century and remains one of the most respected Cru Bourgeois properties. Located just north of Saint-Estèphe, the estate consistently produces robust, structured Médoc wines that offer excellent value and impressive longevity.
