1985 Viberti Pietro, Dolcetto d’Alba – Piedmont, Italy

A rare, fully mature example of Dolcetto d’Alba from Viberti Pietro, a respected Barolo-area producer known for traditional winemaking and expressive, terroir-driven wines. The 1985 vintage was one of the best of the decade in Piedmont — warm, dry, and perfectly suited to producing ripe, balanced fruit.

Though Dolcetto is typically made for earlier drinking, bottles that have been well cellared, like this one, can evolve beautifully into soft, nutty, and gently aromatic wines with surprising depth.

In the glass, it shows a pale brick-red colour with light garnet edges. The nose is delicate and evolved, offering notes of dried cherry, almond, violets, and tobacco, along with subtle hints of spice, leather, and forest floor.

On the palate, it is soft and mellow, with fully integrated tannins and gentle acidity. Flavours of dried red berries, cocoa, and earthy spice give way to a dry, savoury finish with a touch of bitter almond — classic for aged Dolcetto. The wine retains a charming rusticity that speaks of its Piedmont origins.

    Serving Suggestions
Serve at 16–18 °C, without heavy decanting — just open 20–30 minutes before pouring to let the aromas unfold.

Pairs well with pasta with tomato or meat ragù, grilled sausages, or aged cheeses such as Taleggio or Pecorino. Also excellent with mushroom risotto or charcuterie for a simple northern Italian pairing.
