Description
1985 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva, Giuseppe Fanetti
Tuscany, Italy
The 1985 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva from Giuseppe Fanetti is a magnificent example of traditional Tuscan winemaking at its most expressive. Fanetti, often credited with reviving the reputation of Montepulciano’s wines in the post-war era, produced reds of remarkable purity and finesse from his historic Tenuta Sant’Agnese estate.
The 1985 vintage, one of the most celebrated of the century in central Italy, yielded wines of perfect ripeness and balance — and this Riserva showcases those traits in full measure. In the glass, it reveals a deep ruby-garnet hue with subtle amber at the rim. The nose is complex and evolved, offering layers of dried cherry, plum, cedar, leather, and sweet tobacco, intertwined with delicate notes of truffle, wild herbs, and warm terracotta.
On the palate, it is supple and harmonious, the Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) fruit beautifully integrated with silky tannins and lively acidity. Flavours of dried red fruit, balsamic spice, and roasted chestnut unfold gracefully, leading to a long, savoury finish marked by hints of earth and dried flowers.
The 1985 vintage is widely recognised as a benchmark year for Tuscan reds, and Fanetti’s Riserva captures its timeless charm with authenticity and poise. A wine of quiet depth and noble character — an exquisite expression of Montepulciano’s enduring elegance and Giuseppe Fanetti’s legacy.
