1967 Wine and Port Vintage
The latour estate is located at the southern edge of Pauillac and was bought in 1993 by the French billionaire industrialist François Pinault, whose empire includes Yves St. Laurent, Gucci and Christie’s Auction House.
In terms of volumes, on average there are about 20,000 cases of Latour made each year. In Pauillac the Cabernet Sauvignon grape dominates, accounting for 80% of the vineyard, with Merlot at 18% and Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot comprising the remaining 2%.
Much of Latour's success is due to severe selection of only the healthiest fruit, total de-stemming, and separate tanks for each parcel of vines. A three-week long maceration is followed by malolactic fermentation in vats before the wine chosen to become Ch. Latour is run off into 100% new barrels for ageing.
The wine is often described as powerful, structured and compelling, and has probably been the most consistent performer amongst the First Growth Wines over the past century, producing very good wine even in the more challenging vintages. It has great potential to age, with the best vintages lasting more than 50 years. Vintage Summary and Recommendations:

In 1967, the gods favored Italy, blessing both Tuscany and Piedmont with an exceptionally fine vintage often touted as the "vintage of the decade". Bordeaux was also good but a touch on the light side, with the best wines being from Pomerol. Burgundy was similar. Port was also reasonably good, but it was really Italy’s year. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 58 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The first scheduled colour television broadcasts from six transmitters covering the main population centres in England began on BBC2 for certain programmes, the first being live coverage from the Wimbledon Championships. A full colour service (other than news programmes) began on BBC2 on 2 December.
Eurovision: UNITED KINGDOM with the song "Puppet on a String" by Sandie Shaw
Top Grossing Movie: The Jungle Book
Bordeaux: The 1967 vintage is generally considered to be a good, solid vintage that favoured the vineyards in regions that harvested early such as Pomerol, Graves and St Emilion. The 1967 wines will not improve further with age and are still very drinkable and pleasant.
Italian: 1967 Italian wines represent an outstanding vintage which was probably the best of the decade. Good growing conditions particularly in Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines that will last for many years to come.
Portugal: Making a great wine gift for any birthday or anniversary, the 1967 port vintage is a very good vintage that was somewhat overshadowed by the exceptional 1966. It was declared by about 15 shippers. The 1967 ports showed well at recent tastings; they have good structure and elegant fruit and will keep for many years to come.

Magnum . For me, the star of the evening. So complete, so much at the height of its powers, so dense yet fresh.I couldn't help thinking of that ad for menthol cigarettes - 'pure as mountain stream' was the slogan, wasn't it? Sweet and richly flattering without being remotely heavy. It's possible that in bottle sizes this wine is much more developed. Jancis Robinson
"Unquestionably the best wine produced in the Medoc in 1967, the Latour has dark ruby color with some browning at the edges, a medium- to full-bodied feel, plenty of black currant fruit, and some light, soft tannins still present. …
