In 1967, the gods favored Italy, blessing both Tuscany and Piedmont with an exceptionally fine vintage often touted as the "vintage of the decade". Bordeaux was also good but a touch on the light side, with the best wines being from Pomerol. Burgundy was similar. Port was also reasonably good, but it was really Italy’s year. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 59 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1967 Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
  • Burmester 1967 Colheita Port
  • Barbaresco 1967 Gaja
  • Barolo 1967 Giordano
  • Chateau Margaux 1967 1er Grand Cru Classe
  • Chateau Mouton Cadet 1967 Baron Philippe de Rothschild

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The first scheduled colour television broadcasts from six transmitters covering the main population centres in England began on BBC2 for certain programmes, the first being live coverage from the Wimbledon Championships. A full colour service (other than news programmes) began on BBC2 on 2 December.
Eurovision: UNITED KINGDOM with the song "Puppet on a String" by Sandie Shaw
Top Grossing Movie: The Jungle Book

Bordeaux: The 1967 vintage is generally considered to be a good, solid vintage that favoured the vineyards in regions that harvested early such as Pomerol, Graves and St Emilion. The 1967 wines will not improve further with age and are still very drinkable and pleasant.

Italian: 1967 Italian wines represent an outstanding vintage which was probably the best of the decade. Good growing conditions particularly in Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines that will last for many years to come.

Portugal: Making a great wine gift for any birthday or anniversary, the 1967 port vintage is a very good vintage that was somewhat overshadowed by the exceptional 1966. It was declared by about 15 shippers. The 1967 ports showed well at recent tastings; they have good structure and elegant fruit and will keep for many years to come.

    Quinta do Noval, 1967

    Vintage Port

A rare bottle of Quinta do Noval 1967 Vintage Port

Tasted at the Port Forum in 2017.
    Review:
A lovely cherry red colour, 40% opaque. Another wonderful nose, with sweet cherry and mature spiced fruit. Thick in texture and flavoured with sweet red apples combine to give an impressive palate presence. Awesome balance and a terrific palate. Fragrant fruit drives the aftertaste, followed by a delicious cherry finish with a great length. This is a very fine vintage port and was my wine of the night. 94/100. Decanted 13 hours. AHB.

    Refosco, 1967

    del Peduncolo Rosso, Casarsa

Refosco is a very old Italian family of dark-skinned grape varieties native to the northern Italian and neighbouring areas of Friuli, Gavi, Trentino,Istria, and Karst Plateau. It is considered autochthonous in these regions. The wines this grape yields can be quite powerful and tannic, with a deep violet color and a slight bitterness. On the palate, there are strong currant, wild berry and plum flavors. The wine can stand some aging.

    Rioja, 1967

    Bodegas Riojanas, Monte Real Reserva
    Damaged label

Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Reserva 1967 – Rioja

The 1967 Monte Real Reserva from Bodegas Riojanas is a beautifully mature and traditionally styled Rioja, offering elegance, subtle complexity and gentle savoury depth after decades of ageing. The colour has softened to a pale garnet with pronounced amber and brick tones at the rim, reflecting its long and graceful evolution.

The nose is delicate yet expressive, with aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and plum skin layered with leather, tobacco, old wood, vanilla and gentle coconut from extended American oak ageing. Notes of forest floor, dried herbs, orange peel and soft spice add further nuance and classic Rioja character.

    Rocha's, 1967

    Colheita Port

    Rochas, 1967 Colheita Port

The 1967 harvest in the Douro Valley produced wines of notable concentration and balance, well suited to long oxidative ageing. While the year was not widely declared for Vintage Port, it proved particularly successful for Colheita Ports — wines from a single harvest that mature slowly in seasoned oak casks for many decades before bottling.

Rochas 1967 Colheita Port has spent many years ageing in wood, developing the remarkable depth and complexity that only long cask maturation can provide. The bouquet reveals layers of dried fig, raisin and caramelised orange peel, accompanied by notes of toasted almond, walnut and warm spice.

    Late Bottled Vintage Port

    Summary

Royal Oporto 1967 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a rare mature LBV from the historic Real Companhia Velha, one of Portugal’s oldest Port producers. Unlike most LBVs that are consumed relatively young, this example has benefited from many decades of bottle ageing, allowing it to develop a level of complexity and refinement seldom seen in this style.

    Tasting Notes

The wine shows a deep garnet colour with a softened tawny edge, reflecting its long maturation. The bouquet is richly developed, offering aromas of dried cherries, figs and raisins layered with notes of walnut, leather, cedar and gentle spice.

    Sandeman, 1967

    Vintage Port
(Library stock from Sandeman cellars, Oporto)

*** 93 Points for the Love of Port ***

These bottles were recently acquired from Sandeman's cellars in Oporto as part of their historic library stock. They have been specially relabelled by Sandeman to mark their 50th Anniversary.

    Reviews:
93 Points Roy Hersch: "There is a first time for everything. This gentle giant is one of the very best of the Ports I have had from the lackluster 1967 vintage, which managed to produce a few very well-made VPs. The Sandeman is still in great shape. Due to the lighting it is impossible to tell the color. The aromatics dance out of the glass with ultra-potent, sweet violet and floral notes with a hint of mocha.

    Vintage Port

    Sandeman, 1967
    Vintage Port

    Summary

Sandeman 1967 Vintage Port is a rare and mature example from a small but respected vintage in the Douro. With nearly six decades of bottle ageing, the wine has evolved into a beautifully complex and harmonious Vintage Port, showing the elegance and subtlety that only long cellaring can bring.

    Tasting Notes

Now displaying a deep tawny-garnet colour with a softened rim, the wine opens with a beautifully developed bouquet of dried figs, walnut, old leather and cedar, layered with hints of spice and dark chocolate.

    Single Harvest Tawny Port
    Presented in Taylor's Beechwood case

Taylors have just announced a limited release of their 1967 Single Harvest Tawny Port. This is a new release of a rich, mellow and spicy 1967 Single Harvest Port.

It is presented in a classic Taylor’s frosted bottle, and packaged in a high quality beech-wood box.

During its five decades of ageing in oak casks, this wine has taken on an attractive pale mahogany colour with olive amber highlights. On the nose the wine displays fine oaky aromas and complex spicy, nutty, cigar box notes against a warm mellow background of butterscotch and molasses. The smooth velvety palate is lifted by a crisp acidity which gives the wine an attractive freshness in spite of its age.

    Tokaji, 1967

    Aszu 5 Puttonyos, Monimpex
    Sweet White Wine

Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labelling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot. Creating the botrytised ('aszú') grapes for which the region is famous.
