1997 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port: 1997 was one of the great port vintages of the decade and marked a general declaration of vintage. The vintage is characterised by full-bodied wines that will be at their best after 2015.

Italian: 1997 is undoubtedly a great vintage for Italian wines. Like 1982 and 1990 Bordeaux, it will have its critics because of its extreme style, but if wine is a beverage of pleasure, this vintage offers extraordinary wines.

Bordeaux: The 1997 vintage wines are characterised by being attractive, soft, user friendly with broad appeal. They have been quick to mature and, except for the most concentrated wines, should be drunk within the next few years.

Chateau Latour, 1997

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 90 Points Robert Parker ***

"The 1997 Latour will be a surprisingly fine wine, as well as one of the longest lived offerings of the vintage. It possesses lots of tannin and depth, along with medium to full body, and a textured, multidimensional personality. Sweet, jammy fruit is intertwined with dried herbs, coffee, and earth in this saturated ruby/purple-colored wine. The finish lasts for 20 seconds, a positive sign for a 1997. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 1999

"The 1997 is an elegant Port, though having some good depth. Its tannins were melted and some secondary flavours were already starting to show, the fruit was chaging from ripe plums to candied figs. It is reaching its 2nd plateau of maturity.

Good colour, great legs and nose. Quite nice when opened. Perhaps a trace of liquorice and a hint of 'medicinal' character but these initial characteristics soon faded. After 3-4 hours - quite rich and aromatic with good cherry fruit and a touch of maraschino at the end. Tannins have integrated completely. Excellent with roast sirloin.
