1997 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port:

1997-wine-gifts
1997 was one of the great port vintages of the decade and marked a general declaration of vintage. The vintage is characterised by full-bodied wines that will be at their best now, but will remain at their peak for at least another 20 or 30 years if stored with care. A 1997 Vintage Port would make a great 25 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary celebration this year.

Italian: 1997 was undoubtedly a great vintage for Italian wines. Like the 1982 and 1990 Bordeaux vintages, it will have its critics because of its extreme style, but if wine is a beverage of pleasure, this vintage offers extraordinary wines.

Bordeaux: The 1997 wines of Bordeaux are characterised by being attractive, soft and user-friendly with broad appeal. They have been quick to mature and, except for the most concentrated wines, should be drunk within the next few years.

Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 1997

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle ***BOX NOT INCLUDED***

The 1997 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1997

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

Deep ruby-red color. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather and oak spice. Big, sweet and rich, with lush black cherry and black raspberry fruit already offering enticing inner-mouth flavor. Less oaky on the palate than on the nose. Just a hint of herbaceousness. Finishes subtle and quite long, with impressively even, ripe tannins but not quite the snap of the '96. A terrific effort for the vintage. Stephen Tanzer Vinous

Sweet, jammy fruit is intertwined with dried herbs, coffee, and earth in this saturated ruby/purple-colored wine. The finish lasts for 20 seconds, a positive sign for a 1997. Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1997

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews:
"The superb 1997 Mouton-Rothschild is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. This wine reveals a sensationally flamboyant nose of black fruits, coffee, licorice, and creme de cassis. Medium-bodied, with sweet tannin, with lots of layers of flavor. It possesses good spice, an opulent texture, and remarkable length. This is a very hedonistic, open-knit Mouton that has put on considerable weight. Only 55% of the crop made it into the 1997 Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2022." Parker, Wine Advocate

Chateau Potensac, 1997

Medoc

The Chateau Potensac 1997 has plenty of cassis, leaf and cedar to begin with. The wine is fresh and gains in the glass. The fruits have a ripe, creamy edge from the vintage but the wine remains savoury and true. It has ample structure beneath the flesh and is still drinking nicely. A beautiful mature older Medoc.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1997

Domaine Mont Redon

An outstanding wine still with a deep red colour. This hasreally strong bouquet with lovely packing in it; there is charm in the soft red fruits, but power and depth in behind, via some tobacco and rum: all comes in a silken air. This is rich on the palate, backed by good structure and tannin to keep it in shape. Very good length.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1997

Tinta Negra (medium sweet style)

Madeira is made on the volcanic island of the same name situated in the Atlantic ocean some 400 miles off the North Africa coast. The sub-tropical island was discovered in 1419 by Portuguese word for wood or timber. In 1807, John Blandy was posted to the island as part of the British Army garrison sent to Madeira to thwart any invasion attempt by Napoleons forces. He returned and settled on the island in 1811 establishing himself in the wine trade.

This Sweet amber-tinged Madeira, has keen acidity and a long and mellow finish, with a certain delicacy.

Inferno, 1997

Triacca

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

Justino's Madeira, 1997

Justino's - Sercial

"Medium golden colour with hues of green and silver. Delicately intense nose of walnuts and pecan nuts with cinnamon and figs. The palate is beautifully firm, with an off dry impression which glides across the tongue in a very sleek and focussed manner; the acidity is electric . there is also a beautiful sapid salinity, flavours of lime and yuzu with rancio elements on the long, lingering finish. A sensational example. " Tasting Notes

Justino's Madeira, 1997

Justino's - Malvasia

"There won’t be a lot of this wine on the palate so it is a rare privilege to have tasted it. Amber in colour the wine is woody to the nose as it should be, it is on the palate that this wine reveals itself, extraordinary levels of layered flavour, nuts and candied orange, sweet but with an utterly bracing acidity that keeps the wine from being at all cloying. A rare wine and a world class wine, a true delight and a wine to share amongst the best of friends." Tasting Notes
