Despite some odd weather, the 2007 vintage was largely a success throughout the wine world – with the exception of dry Bordeaux. There should be a wide range of wines, particularly reds, from various regions around the world still drinking well now with the best likely to cellar for some years more.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Palmer 2007 White Port
  • Quinta Das Carvalhas 2007 Colheita Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 2007 Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
  • Burmester 2007 Vintage Port
  • Blandys 2007 Malmsey Colheita Maderia
  • Chateau Leoville Barton 2007 St Julien 2nd Growth

Bordeaux: The finest 2007 wines tend to be dark ruby-coloured with purple highlights, sweet, ripe berry fruit similar to black cherries and black currants, medium body, silky tannins, low acidity, and pure, round, charming personalities with good equilibrium. By and large, however, the wines lack density, structure, and serious long-term ageing potential. Most will be drinkable as soon as they are bottled, and should age surprisingly well for 10-15 years. Truthfully, most consumers will probably love the style of the vintage’s top wines because they are so flattering, seductive, and fruit-forward.

Portugal: The 2007 Port vintage was the first widely declared vintage since 2003; virtually every Port house that matters made a Vintage Port, attesting to the quality of the year. The growing season was preceded by a wet winter, which put plenty of moisture back into the soil after a lengthy period of dry conditions. Summer temperatures were relatively mild (unlike the torrid conditions in 2003, the last previous declared vintage). September and October weather was close to ideal so that the grapes enjoyed a lengthy hang-time under excellent conditions with full ripening of Turiga Francesa and Turiga Nacional, the two most important grape varieties. The quantities produced are small, so there is a high demand for them. There is little doubt that 2007 is a high class vintage, making a port from this year a great 18
year old wine gift for an anniversary this year.

    Chateauneuf du Pape, 2007

    Domaine Vieux Telegraphe, Blanc

2007 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
This mature white Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the historic Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe is a rare and compelling expression of the southern Rhône. A blend of Clairette, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Bourboulenc, the 2007 vintage is now fully evolved, offering a rich, golden hue and a complex nose of baked orchard fruit, orange peel, chamomile, and subtle honeyed notes. The palate is broad and textured, with layers of pear compote, toasted nuts, and a long, savoury finish underscored by saline minerality.

This bottle is in its ideal drinking window, appealing to lovers of well-aged Rhône whites.

    Churchill's Port, 2007

    Vintage Port, Douro
    ***90 Points- Wine Advocate***

Coffee, lavender and rose add complexity to the intense blackberry nose; on the palate the Churchill is a bold and powerful wine with the floral notes continuing through to the marmalade spiked bramble fruit. Fresh acidity and grippy tannins give massive structure - this is a wine for the long term.

Reviews: "The 2007 Fonseca Vintage Port is opaque purple-colored with a high-class perfume of lavender, Asian spices, pencil lead, incense, and an amalgam of black fruits. On the palate it is voluminous with layered, succulent fruit, outstanding density, and excellent integration of tannin, acidity, and alcohol. The long finish and the wine’s impeccable balance suggest a lengthy evolution and a drinking window extending out to 2045. " Jay Miller, Wine Advocate.

"The nose is quintessential Fonseca, like a riotous party reaching its crescendo in the glass.
