Chateau La Lagune, 2004
Haut Medoc, 3rd Growth Classification
An outstanding 2004 bordeaux wine from Chateau La Lagune.
"The 2004 and offerings from La Lagune are the finest back-to-back vintages they have produced in over fifteen years. Kudos to the Frey family, who also purchased the Rhone Valley flagship firm of Paul Jaboulet-Aine in 2005. Their daughter, Caroline Frey, is the oenologist at La Lagune. The sexy, up-front, evolved 2004 La Lagune exhibits a dark ruby/purple hue as well as big nose of cedar, spice box, black cherry jam, licorice, and smoke. Savory, broad, ripe, and low in acidity, it is a total hedonistic and intellectual turn-on.

Quevedo, 2002
Colheita Port in Gift Box
90 Points- Wine Advocate
2002 was a difficult year. Definitively the biggest challenge of the decade - even for Quevedo. Since no grapes were used to produce Vintage Port, their best selection was used to make this Colheita. With 20 years of ageing in their cellar, this is probably the most elegant and complex Colheita produced so far.
Winemakers Notes
COLOUR: Light brick
AROMA: Very complex and intense notes of spices, caramel, dried fruits.
PALATE: Powerful entry with a rich profusion of dried fruits, mid palate filled with candied fruits. Spices on the lingering finish put together this layered, complex and elegant Port. …

Chateau Brane Cantenac, 2002
Margaux 2me cru Classe
The 2002 Château Brane-Cantenac from Margaux is a solid example of the elegance and finesse that characterizes wines from this Left Bank estate, even in a challenging vintage. The 2002 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by unpredictable weather, with a rainy summer and a warm, dry September that allowed grapes to ripen adequately, though it was a year requiring skillful winemaking to produce wines of quality.
In the glass, this Brane-Cantenac reveals a medium ruby color with slight garnet edges, indicative of its age. The nose opens with aromas of blackcurrant, plum, and cherry, followed by subtle hints of cedar, tobacco, and earthy undertones that add complexity. …

Chateau d'Yquem, 2002
Sauternes 1er Cru Classe - Half Bottle
Chateau d`Yquem is often described as the greatest sweet wine in the world. After centuries of family ownership, Yquem was finally sold in acrimonious circumstances to Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy in 1999. However, its former owner and director Alexandre de Lur-Saluce remains in charge. Yquem is located on the highest hill in Sauternes and enjoys the best growing conditions in the whole appellation. The 110-hectare vineyard is planted with 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Only fully botrytized fruit is picked by the 150 highly skilled pickers and yields are so low that each vine produces only one glass of wine. …

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 2001
Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
"Lifted blackberry, autumn leaf, cedar and a touch of fresh tobacco, the mintiness enhanced by continued aeration. The palate is very tight and slightly pinched at the moment, the tannins a little harder and less fine than Lafite, the finish slightly chalky and foursquare in texture. Personally, I prefer the 2002 to the previous year, but it is still a decent, mid-weight Pauillac that would show better with cuisine. Drink 2013-2025. Tasted November 2010." Neil Martin Wine Journal

Chateau Talbot, 2001
St Julien, 4me Cru Classe
** 90 Points Neil Martin **
Reviews
"This may be the largest vineyard in the Medoc, with nearly 300 acres under vine. There was a period in the nineties where Talbot seemed to be a bit off form, but quality over recent vintages has displayed considerable promise. This estate is capable of producing very special wines, as anyone who has tasted their 1986 or 1982 can easily attest. The 2001, which represents only 50% of the production, is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. A dense saturated ruby/purple color is followed by notes of smoked herbs, licorice, cedar, incense, plums, and black currants. …

99 Points - Wine Spectator
98 Points - Wine Enthusiast
98/100 - Tom Cannavan
The 2001 Vintage Port Nacional is a late release, declared in 2003. Christian Seely, Owner of Quinta do Noval said that "The 2001 was extremely backward and quite closed up, dense and very tannic. Since we had just declared and released the 2000 Nacional, we decided to lay down the 250 cases of Nacional 2001. The late release has certainly tamed this. It still feels very firm and has a real backbone, but it is not overly drying and it is a lot more approachable than newly-released Nacionals can be.
Q. Do Noval Director Christian Seeley :
“Although we declared Quinta do Noval Nacional 2001 officially in 2003, we did not release the wine for sale at the time. …

Chateau d'Yquem, 2000
Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
Only 25,000 bottles of Yquem were made in this very tough Sauternes vintage. A truly valiant effort from this fine property.
"The millennial 2000 Chateau d’Yquem is a valiant effort in one of the most challenging Sauternes vintages in recent memory. The 2000 is quite deep in colour. The nose is crisp and well-defined but not the most complex, as you would expect from a truly challenging growing season in Sauternes. It is pleasant in its own way with delicate scents of tangerine, yellow flowers and Mirabelle. The palate is well-balanced with marmalade tinged opening. I like the acidity here, an Yquem with good race, although it does feel a little tapered toward the finish. …

Dow's, 2000
Vintage Port, Douro ** 94 Points** Wine Advocate **
**94 Points** Robert Parker
"An opaque blue/purple colour (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2050." Robert Parker

Chateau Gruaud Larose, 1998
Saint-Julien, Bordeaux
The 1998 Gruaud Larose appears to be a potential sleeper of the vintage, and may merit an outstanding score. It is a powerful, bulky style of Gruaud-Larose, with a dark ruby/purple color, and plenty of cassis, spicy new oak, and roasted herbs in the jammy nose. On the palate, the wine has lost much of the forward precociousness it was revealing last spring, now boasting loads of tannin in its powerful, muscular flavors.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1998
Vintage Port, Douro
Vintage Report:
After a mild June, July and August were hot and dry, leading to good even maturation, with the Tinta Barroca looking particularly promising. Maturation studies carried out between 19th August and the beginning of the vintage, determined the following picking order at Vesuvio: Old vineyards; Tinta Barroca; Tinta Amarela; Tinta Roriz; Touriga Nacional; Tinto Cão; and Touriga Franca. Picking began on the 21nd September and continued until 4th October; great care being taken to select and vinify the very best fruit separately, once perfect ripeness had been achieved. Grape quality was very good with average sugar readings an excellent 12o-13o Baumé. …
