Sandeman, 2019

Vintage Port
Quinta do Seixo
*** Gold Medal IWC 2022 ***
*** Gold Medal Decanter 2022 ***

Tasting Notes Deep ruby in colour, almost opaque. On the nose intense aromas of red and black fruits are married with spicy notes of pepper and ginger, hints of cacao and a subtle stony minerality. Great intensity on the palate, with opulent and firm tannins and a lively acidity which carries the intense flavours onto long and complex finish.

Luís Sottomayor describes the 2019 vintage as “a very good year, with freshness and great balance." Winter and spring were cooler and drier than normal, but April showers replenished water reserves in the soil and helped sustain the vines through the dry summer that followed.

The “Castiglione” Barolo is our take on Barolo classico. The grapes come from small yet significant vineyards in the various municipalities of Barolo, and the vines are between 10 and 45 years old. The soil is rich in limestone and clay, the Guyot training system is used, and the average density per hectare is 4500 plants.

Winemaking
Each individual cru is vinified and aged separately and in different ways to bring out the characteristics of each “terroir”. The grapes are harvested by hand in October. After gentle pressing, the juice fermented for around three to four weeks in a steel tank, in contact with the skins.
