Poliziano

Nobile di Montepulciano is a red wine with a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montepulciano, Italy. The wine is made primarily from the Sangiovese grape varietal (known locally as Prugnolo gentile) (minimum 70%), blended with Canaiolo Nero (10%–20%) and small amounts of other local varieties such as Mammolo. The wine is aged for 2 years (at least 1 year in oak barrels); three years if it is a riserva.

Recioto di Soave is a sweet white wine made from dried grapes grown in the Soave viticultural zone of Veneto, northeastern Italy. The DOCG title, which includes the Classico version, was granted in 1998.

Recioto di Soave is made from grapes that have been dried out for several weeks or even months after harvest. Traditionally this process took place on straw mats (it is considered a straw wine) in the warmest part of the house or winery.

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac

The 1985 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

1985 was an outstanding vintage for port and the Calem does not disappoint. The port shows a beautiful and intense garnet colour with ruby highlights. The nose denotes intense aromas of red berries, black cherry, prunes and cinnamon spice. On the palate this is drier style than most of the the English shippers. There is smooth mouthfeel, refreshing acidity and soft tannins. A little sour cherry and redcurrant makes this an interesting twist with layers of dried herbs and spices. …

Château Gloria, back in the days when Henri Martin was alive and still running the property, was always one of the most user-friendly wines out of the blocks and a very good value, though of course, not generally built for the long haul. I was happy to see how well the 1985 Gloria continues to drink, with its wide open personality still quite enjoyable and showing no signs of imminent decline. The wine offers up a pretty nose of red and black cherries, cigar ash, a nice touch of soil and a gentle topnote of crushed violets.
