From the famous Quinta da Roeda vineyards, this 1980 single quinta vintage port has a garnet -tawny appearance. The nose is of dried fruit candy and walnuts. The 1980 Eiswein is a sweet dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing for a more concentrated grape juice to develop.

The high residual sugar concentration give these wines great ageing properties - we tasted this bottle over two days. Served chilled from the fridge after a 2 hour decant. The colour is a mid-amber with green tinge around the rim of the glass. Oxidative notes on the nose, burnt molasses apricots, apple jam, tertiary notes and fruits. On the palate there is characteristic eiswein acidity a little'tart' bitterness.

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Baron de Lustrac is a small traditional éleveur specialising in fine old Armagnac vintages. Their extensive range is sourced from neighbouring estates in the Tenereze and Mas Armagnac regions and they keep an ageing and bottling chais near Magnan, in the Bas Armagnac region.

All Baron de Lustrac Armagnacs are aged in 420ltr oak barrels and sold as single vintages. The grapes used are all harvested from the one particular year, and will only be distilled if the conditions were particularly good. Clear ruby red with almost no bricking. Classic St. Julien nose with black currants, tobacco leaves and some pencil shavings. No signs of oxidation. On the palate surprisingly vigorous for a wine with 37 years under its belt. Acidity clearly dominates the almost completely resolved tannins. Slightly astringent towards the medium+ finish. A very impressive effort from Gruaud Larose in a rather weak vintage.
