This wine really lives up to the nature of the vintage. Tannins still present , but sufficient fruit to balance the wine. Just a bit of bricking, slight sedimentation, colour still dark purple. Floral fruity nose, with a trace of iron. Slight chalky finish, clearly more tannic than it's age suggests. Suggest something meaty to go with the tannins.

About what you would anticipate from a well made Trotanoy from a modest vintage for the appelation. Qualitatively the same as the Petrus but sylistically different since there was a quite attractive topnote of soft summer strawberry. A bit of coarse tannin is still in the the background so the balance is slightly off kilter.

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.
