Quinta do Vesuvio, 2001
Vintage Port
The 2001 Quinta do Vesuvio is a very dark ruby colour. The Touriga Nacional’s tiny yields brought great concentration to the wine, while the Touriga Franca, due to the good weather during the harvest, achieved perfect ripening, creating wines of great elegance. The Tinta Barroca was very ripe at the time of picking, with a higher than average baumé, producing wines of excellent structure and ageing potential. The old plantings of Tinta Roriz had lower than normal yields in 2001, giving wines with a typical concentration of berry fruit aromas.

Niepoort Port, 2000
Secundum Vintage Port, Douro
Dirk Niepoort has created this second style of vintage port called “Secundum Vintage”. The Secundum’s intention is to provide an approachable Vintage that offers immediate satisfaction yet is well-balanced enough to age for decades. So it is not a second wine, but instead an alternative, slightly more affordable bottling for Niepoort fans who can’t afford or obtain the regular Vintage Port. It’s a proper Vintage Port, but from wines considered not classic enough to be a Vintage Niepoort. The 2000 vintage has a slightly sweet herbal edge to the nose. Rich, full flavoured palate shows sweet fruit with a chunky, spicy edge. …

Quinta do Poco do Lobo, 1991
Quinta do Poço do Lobo, Bairrada
Damaged label
Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character, …

Sandeman, 1985
Vintage Port
"Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced...The 1985 has less of a deep-ruby/purple color, but it does offer a spice-box, fruitcake sort of aroma, mildly sweet, medium- to full-bodied flavors, and a ripe, tasty finish. Not a heavyweight, this wine represents a lighter style of vintage port. (1/ 1989) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
