Tasting Notes: The 1968 Port from Palmer has a light oak colour with a verdant edge on the rim highlighting a colheita of exceptional age and quality. Much elegance on the nose with orange peel, walnuts, figs and a touch of honey. On the palate there is a lightness that is balanced by a good acidity. This port wine delivers a beautiful flavour supported by a long, long finish. Outstanding.

On the palate, ripe and sweet not quite in tune but still quite opulent with integrated tannins. Excellent finish - my first tasting of a '68 and quite a surprise for a generally undeclared year. Barbaresco, 1968

Calissano Luigi - Riserva Speciale

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Baron de Lustrac is a small traditional éleveur specialising in fine old Armagnac vintages. Their extensive range is sourced from neighbouring estates in the Tenereze and Mas Armagnac regions and they keep an ageing and bottling chais near Magnan, in the Bas Armagnac region.

All Baron de Lustrac Armagnacs are aged in 420ltr oak barrels and sold as single vintages. The grapes used are all harvested from the one particular year, and will only be distilled if the conditions were particularly good. Blandys Madeira, 1968

Sercial Madeira (75cl Bottle)

Blandy’s Vintage Sercial 1968 is a single harvest Madeira. This wine was aged for 38 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the casks were gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. The wine was regularly racked and when it reached the desired stage of maturity it was bottled.

Only a limited number of bottles of this wine were released. Vintage (or Frasquiera) Madeira must be aged in cask for a minimum of 20 years, in practise they are aged for much longer, before being bottled under Madeira Wine Institute supervision.

The Nebbiolo d'Alba has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavoured wines. Deep amber colour with greenish hints. In the nose stands-out the exuberance of the dried fruits with outstanding hazelnut suggestions.
