1970 Ramos Pinto Port

Ramos Pinto Vintage Port - Including deluxe gift box with accessories

From the outstanding 1970 vintage, the Ramos Pinto is a beautiful port. Excellent colour with a little red. On the nose jammy strawberries, spice, a hint of pepper and liquorice. On the palate, so beautifully smooth and in great balance, red fruit some violets. A long long finish. This is a beautiful wine.

Reviews
"Mature in appearance with a wide rose rim; 60% opaque but full of fine sediment. Delicious redcurrants on the nose, mature and sweet. Rounded and sweet on the palate with lots of sweet fruit but lacking a little acidity so feeling a touch flabby. Very sweet on the late palate, with lots of parma violets which appear on and dominate the aftertaste.

1970 Armagnac

Jeanneau

The great vintages or millésimés of Janneau are the expression of a single year, most commonly of a single cask. Produced exclusively with the single distillation process, they are the quintessence of this precious distillate aged over the years. Each vintage expresses its unique character. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a sharp contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish.

1970 Barbaresco

Tenuta "Vanotu" di Pelissero Luigi

Barbaresco is characterised by its rich, spicy flavours and perfumed sweetness and is considered more elegant and refined than its counterpart Barolo. For the added designation of riserva, the ageing increases to four years, with one spent in wood.

1970 Barolo

Cascina Luciani - Grasso Alessio

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods.

1970 Chateau Bellefont Belcier

Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe

A delicate bouquet with red fruits, licorice, butter and oak. This is still very much alive, with berry fruits and a musty, cigar box that follows the wine throughout. It is full bodied with a nice long finish.

Chateau Bellefont Belcier dates back to the seventeenth century as an estate. The vineyard was officially founded in the middle of the eighteenth century by Count Louis Francois de Belcier, which as you can guess, is where the estate took the first part of its name from. In 1803, the Count constructed the chateau that remains in use today.

Amazingly deep, dense colour. Immensely rich opulent spicy bouquet. Stupendous. Deep, rich plums. A real rich taste of Medoc terroir. Infused with haunting Havana flavours. 1970 Chateau Margaux

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe

Michael Broadbent: "A big wine, but unsurprisingly, much more approachable than the Latour...The two most useful notes, and the most recent, once again made at Wagner's verticals, first in 1997, the second three years later. Almost identical notes. Now medium deep, a lovely colour; nose low-keyed but harmonious, sweet, good fruit, slow to open up; medium sweetness and body, rich, good fruit, grip and balance, its sustaining tannins and acidity under control. Last tasted November 2000. 4 stars. Drink or keep." (Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine, pg 79)

1970 chateau Phelan Segur

St Estephe, Cru Grand Bourgeois Exceptional

Colour is darker than expected with very little bricking. Nose shows clear signs of age and let's you know it is no longer at peak but after a few minutes of air exposure, it comes together nicely. Classic wet tobacco and ash notes on the nose. Medium body but full attack with bright acidity and even though both fruit and tannins have receded, there's still some sweetness. It really penetrates your tastebuds. More tertiary notes of forest floor, game, wet leather, tobacco and cigar box. Finish is pleasant.

1970 Dom Perignon

Champagne, 1.5cm inverted

Dom Perignon gets its name from the Benedictine Monk, who in 1668 became the cellar master at Benedictine abbey of Hautvillers, in Marne, Champagne. During his time at the abbey, the vineyards thrived, and he made it his ambition to create - in his own words "the best wine in the world". By adopting new techniques, he was a pioneer in wine making and is thought to be the first to blend different grape varieties to improve the quality of wine. Dom Perignon is now a hugely sought after, top quality champagne.

Tasting notes:
Apple notes shine through. A touch oxidized, but it needed time to open up.

1970 Graham's Port

Vintage Port

*** 93 Points (Parker) ***

"...a definite Bordeaux-like nose! Well defined, foursquare at first, opening up nicely with maraschino cherries, cloves, burnt wood/embers and bergamot, gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is very harmonious and elegant. Fleshy, harmonious, seductive on the palate with allspice, nutmeg and ginger sprinkled over the viscous finish and finally, freshly rolled tobacco on the aftertaste. Good length, powerful like many of the 1970 ports continue to be. Superb. Drink now-2020+ Neil Martin Wine Journal Tasted September 2009.

1970 Inferno

Nino Negri

The 1970 Inferno di Valtellina has a bright crimson colour, with an aromatic bouquet of dried cherries, tar and rose water. As might be expected for a mountain-grown wine made from Nebbiolo, the body is relatively light, and laced with grippy tannins and high acidity. Valtellina wines are invariably lighter in body and power than their more famous and prestigious equivalents from Barolo and Barbaresco. With a few years of bottle age, game, leather-like notes will develop, and the crimson will turn to garnet with a brick-orange rim – the visual trademark of Nebbiolo-based wines.

Valtellina, an alpine valley in the far north of Lombardy, has been producing wine for over 2000 years.

1970 Quinta Do Noval Nacional

Nacional- Vintage Port

“This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.” Christian Seely

The terroir: a small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines and untouched by phylloxera, described as “attached to the soil of the Nation”.
