Chateau Haut Brion, 1970

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 90-92 points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "Brown rim. Brown sugar, olives and leather nose. Quite rich for 1970. Balanced and very smooth palate. Coffee & sweet red fruits. Fully mature, a highly enjoyable wine (and far cheaper than Latour.) Somewhat under-rated by others. Then again chez Alex Hunt in November 2005. Although a little musty at first, this wine grows and grows on you. A cool, blackberry leaf, cranberry nose with lots of cedar and pine is followed by a tannic, almost rustic, broad-shouldered palate with cedary, tobacco-infused fruit. Very classic in style but suited the venison perfectly.

Chateau La Tour Carnet, 1970

Haut Medoc, 4th Growth Classification (Half Bottle 37.5 cl)

A classified growth that remains somewhat under-the-radar. Château La Tour Carnet, a 4emé Cru Classé property, has a long and illustrious history and its wines enjoyed a considerable upsurge in reputation since the mid-1970's when it was bought by Louis Lipschitz. He replanted much of the vineyards and made many long overdue changes to the vinification process.

La Tour Carnet has 42 hectares of vineyards in St-Laurent in the Haut-Médoc. The wine is typically a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. La Tour Carnet produces dry, medium-bodied, classically made clarets that show at their best with 5 years of bottle ageing.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1970

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Wonderful notes of smoke, mild truffle and focussed ripe plum; charred oak - all incredibly concentrated. As it developed on the palate the fruit subtly emerged to the fore, with remarkable race and no leanness and with all the non-fruit aromas converting to a magnificent backdrop in the mouth. Great length and perfect acidity.

Chateau Laroze, 1970

Saint Emilion Grand Cru (Berry Bros Label)

Lush black cherry fruit. As this wine sits in the glass, notes of earth, dried Provencal herbs, and kirsch emerge, as if the wine was a hybrid between a southern Cotes du Rhone and a classic Bordeaux. There is some tannin in the finish.

Chateau Margaux, 1970

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe Half bottle (Mid-shoulder)

Michael Broadbent: "A big wine, but unsurprisingly, much more approachable than the Latour...The two most useful notes, and the most recent, once again made at Wagner's verticals, first in 1997, the second three years later. Almost identical notes. Now medium deep, a lovely colour; nose low-keyed but harmonious, sweet, good fruit, slow to open up; medium sweetness and body, rich, good fruit, grip and balance, its sustaining tannins and acidity under control. Last tasted November 2000. 4 stars. Drink or keep." (Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine, pg 79)

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1970

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
levels mid-shoulder.

**93 Points - Robert Parker**

The 1970 Mouton Rothschild had opened magnificently to reveal a classic bouquet of sweet cassis, tobacco, minerals, and exotic spice aromas. Opulent, full-bodied, thick, and juicy, the extraordinary evolution of this particular bottle would make a persuasive argument for long-term decanting. After being perplexed throughout much of this wine's evolution, I was reassured by this bottle.

Chateau Talbot, 1970

Cellar Tracker review
"Surprisingly robust for this vintage, tight from the start with heavy alcohol and spice up front. Surprisingly, opened up nicely 15-30 minutes in. Cedar, moss, clay, oriental spice and a hint of camphor. Pleasantly surprised by the 79" Cellartraker.com Posted 2017

Chateau Yquem, 1970

Sauternes Premiere Grand Cru Classe

"The 1970 Yquem is a large-scaled, rich, full-bodied, fairly alcoholic Yquem with significant flavor interest as well as crisp acidity. Unlike the 1971, which is close to peak maturity, this wine has a long way to go and is impressive, but not yet revealing all of its potential." Robert Parker, Bordeaux 3rd Edition. Chateauneuf du Pape, 1970

New

Pere Anselme

The red wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape blossom and reach their prime between their third and fifth year, but their potential for aging is over ten years and more according to the vintage and storage conditions. Their color changes from intense garnet-purple in the early years to ruby after some cellaring. These wines are structured, with powerful and complex aromas of ripe fruit, mushrooms, truffles, underbrush, spicy notes, and wild animals.
