Madeira, 1950
MBV - Tinta Negra - Bottled by Barbeito
This is a rare and very limited release of the 1950 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1950 Tinta Negra is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

Madeira, 1950
Justino's - Sercial
Founded in 1870, Justino’s is one Madeira’s oldest producers. This mature 1950 Sercial madeira wine is made from the noble sercial variety with grapes sourced from all over the island. The wine is fortified with neutral distilled grape spirit and aged in wood where it’s gently heated in a process known as estufagem to create the signature style.
This 1950 vintage Sercial Madeira resembles a Tawny Port in colour, yet the nose has pronounced citrus aromas, and as the wine ages the aromatic profile becomes similar to old dry Rieslings. The palate is dry, starts with lemons and oranges and develops nutty flavours with maturity. …

Sandeman Vintage Port, 1950
Vintage Port
Embossed capsule | Plain label
Color: Dark tawny with some red left.
Nose: Sweet Christmas spices. Rich, round sugar. Turpentine.
Palate: Some tannins, edgy. On the dry side for Port (which is typical to me for Sandeman). Decent fruit.
Finish: Medium length. Finish seems younger than the Port's age.

1949 Cantine Antonio Ferrari, 1949
Il 49 di Antonio Ferrari
The Il Barone ‘49 shows a deep garnet colour. For something so old it is still fresh with a touch of oxidation on notes of black cherries, chocolate and espresso infused with sweet spices. The wine has a long finish. This is a wine from the 1949 wine harvest. Fermentation was arrested before complete leaving a high residual sugar content which has preserved the wine. The wine then went into large old Slovenian casks for ten years and then stored in tanks where it has remained until bottling this year. Antonio Ferrari was a wine merchant and negociant in Piedmont who in the mid-20th century developed an interest in the grapes of Puglia. …

Barolo, 1949
Marchesi di Barolo
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1948
Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe
Chateau Haut-Brion has one of the longest and most interesting histories of any Bordeaux vineyard. The property derives its name from an ancient Celtic term “Briga.” Loosely translated, this means a rise or mound in the land. This unique terroir was first prized for growing grapes to produce Bordeaux wine close to 600 years ago!
Chateau Haut Brion has an almost, unequaled track record for quality and its ability to age and evolve. This bottle from the excellent but overlooked 1948 vintage will still offer a unique drinking experience.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1948
Vintage Port
Warre’s Vintage port wines combine elegance, length and balance whilst still retaining the underlying rich opulence of great Vintage Port. This unsurpassed style is derived from the inherent characteristics of Warre’s two principal vineyards: Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Retiro Antigo. They complement each other very well. Cavadinha’s location, aspect and altitude translate into a cooler ripening cycle providing the freshness, fine subtle floral aromas and ideal acidity, the latter contributing significantly to the wines’ longevity. Retiro Antigo’s location in the hotter Rio Torto Valley, …
