Gonzales Byas Vintage Port, 1963

The company is more famous for its sherry but started selling port in the early 1900's. The brand disappeared when it was acquired by Sandeman now part of Sogrape.

Lovely nose, lots of luscious Victoria plums. Medium bodied impact, full of flavours dominated by fruit but with lots of tannin in the palate. Graham's Port, 1963

Vintage Port (Unlabelled branded capsules)

An outstanding 1963 Port scoring 96/100 Parker Points.

Reviews: "What a stunning 1963 vintage port this is! The bouquet draws you in, does not drag you in with its alcohol and reveals a fresh, well defined nose with a nutty edge, hints of cigar box and allspice. The palate is beautifully balanced, understated on the entry but building all the time, flashes of eucalyptus leading towards a more extrovert, clove tinged finish that hangs around the palate. Gorgeous Grahams! Tasted May 2009." Neil Martin, Wine Journal

Mackenzie Vintage Port, 1963

Vintage Port
Original labels badly damaged - sold with plain labels .

The Mackenzie 1963 Vintage Port has an excellent provenance - removed from a damp cellar which has degraded the labels. We will send the bottles out with plan labels unless requested otherwise.

Tasting note (courtesy of the Port Forum). Mid-red with a copper edge; 40% opaque, Smelly nose, not attractive and showing considerable heat. Thick in texture with rich chocolate tannins supporting a sweet and concentrated red jelly bean flavour giving a lovely palate presence. The jelly bean comes through on the aftertaste and leads to an attractive length finish that is full of sharp dried cranberries.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1963

Noval Nacional (in neck)

Noval is particularly famous for its Nacional, a Port produced in some years only from a 2 hectare parcel at the heart of the Noval vineyard where ungrafted pre phylloxera vines survive.

"Last July I enjoyed this "legend" at Noval and consumed my share of an entire bottle that was opened for our small group of Port journalists. This VP had a very dark ruby color and was clearly from a perfectly stored bottle. The 1963 is as lithe and graceful as a trapeze artist, and showed what perfection in balance is all about. It is not easy for Port to get much better than this. Sweet, spicy, grapey, mint, big, bold, brash are all apt descriptors.

Sandeman Vintage Port, 1963

Vintage Port
Excellent Provenance

These bottles are from a good country house cellar where they have been stored since purchase 40 years ago .

** 96/100 - Wine Spectator **

One of the great vintages of the century, and one of the best wines ever released by Sandeman. Classic aromas of figs and prunes, powerful, rich and sweet, with tremendous length.

Reviews:
"This may be one of the most underrated '63s made. Its deep red color gives little indication of the wine's age, and there is an abundance of youthful, rich fruit on the nose and palate. Full tannins and an assertive finish back up everything." 96/100 James Suckling,

Taylor's Port, 1963

Vintage Port MAGNUMS

Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.
