Dark and transparent cherry red. In the nose, there's a lot of Madeira going on at first, with oxidative notes, roasted walnuts, some tar, black olives. The fruit shines through more every 15 minutes and reveals some cherry and blackberry notes. On the palate, it's smooth with a medium finish.

Excellent label and good colour. This wine is from Puglia. Torre Qvarto is a 5000ha family owned estate dating back to 1418. The Torre Qvarto 1961 is made from the long lived primitivo grape, a dark skinned variety related to zinfandel. The wines are tannic and bitter in their youth but over time the tannins will have mellowed leaving a smooth wine with some fruit.

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.
The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years.

The 1955 Butler Nephew has a mature tawny colour. The nose is still complex and enjoyable with herbal notes and molasses.
