Chateau Margaux, 1986

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

96 points - Parker
96 points - Wine Journal

"The 1986 Margaux continues to be the most powerful, tannic, and muscular Margaux made in decades. One wonders if the 1928 or 1945 had as much power and depth as the 1986? The black/ruby/purple color reveals no sign of age. The reluctant nose offers up aromas of smoky, toasty new oak and black currants, as well as a few flowers. The wine is mammoth, with extraordinary extract, superb balance, and a frightfully tannic finish. This is a Margaux of immense stature, made in a masculine, full-bodied style that is in complete contrast to the 1990. It should prove nearly immortal in terms of aging potential, but will it have the awesome potential I first predicted? Anticipated maturity: 2000-2050.

Chateau Yquem, 1986

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe

"With greater evidence of botrytis than the colossal 1983, but less power and alcohol, the 1986 d`Yquem tastes reminiscent of the 1975, only more precocious. Several highly respected Bordeaux negociants who are d`Yquem enthusiasts had claimed the 1986 d`Yquem was the greatest wine produced at the property since the legendary 1937. However, after the release of the 1988 they concluded that the 1988 surpassed even the 1986. The 1986`s enthralling bouquet of pineapples, sautéed hazelnuts, vanillin, and ripe apricots is breath-taking. Compellingly concentrated, its breadth as well as depth of flavour seemingly know no limits.

Fonseca Port, 1986

Guimaraens Vintage Port

In undeclared vintages Fonseca bottle Guimaraens, provided the quality of the fruit is sufficient. This has a good depth of colour, with a moderate red-tawny hue. The nose has exotic notes of musky scent and spiced woods, together with some chocolate edged fruit. The palate has an impressive texture and sweetness immediately apparent on entry. Good fruit and a nice backbone of soft tannins. Elegant, with a touch of complexity, with balance, very much in the house style.

Graham's Port, 1986

Malvedos Vintage Port

In declared Vintage years the wines of Malvedos form the fundamental part of the blend which makes up Grahams Vintage Ports. In many other years when there is not enough top quality wine for Grahams to declare a Vintage, the wine of Malvedos is nevertheless so fine that it is bottled on its own, unblended, when two years old and left to mature in bottle like other Vintage Ports. Unlike declared Vintages, Malvedos Vintage Port is normally only shipped when ready for drinking by which time it is usually at least ten years old, although it continues to improve for many years more.

1985 Calem Vintage Port, 1985

Sale

Vintage Port
Calem Library Release

1985 Calem Vintage Port has impeccable provenance. Stored at the Calem cellars in Porto from bottling until purchase by VWP in June 2020.

1985 was an outstanding vintage for port and the Calem does not disappoint. The 1985 Calem has a beautiful and intense brick red colour with nuances of tawny on the edge. The nose denotes intense and persistent aromas of red berries, black cherry alcohol and blueberry. On the palate this is drier style than most of the the English shippers. There is good mouthfeel, high acidity and resolved tannins. A little sour cherry and redcurrent makes this an interesting twist.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1985

Saint Estephe, 2me Cru Classe

***94 Points, Jeanie Cho Lee***
***95 Parker Points ***

"A fully mature Cos at its prime; delicious to drink with seamless texture and velvety tannins. Several different bottles opened in one evening prove this is a solid Cos that is the epitome of its 'old style' when subtlety was prized more than power."
* Jeannie Cho Lee, 2014*

"The 1985 from cask could have been a lighter version of the 1982 and 1953 vintages. Forward, with a fabulously scented bouquet of pain grille and concentrated red and black fruits (especially black cherries), it is rich, lush, long, and medium to full-bodied.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, 1985

St Julien, 2eme Growth Classification

An outstanding wine scoring 92 Parker points. Reviews: "For sheer elegance, charm, and finesse, the 1985 Ducru-Beaucaillou has it all. The wine is close to full maturity, yet retains a vibrancy and youthfulness that is unusual for a 1985. The generous flavors are soft, but not flabby. The wine possesses outstanding concentration yet is elegant and refreshing. This is a beautifully knit, harmonious Ducru. " Parker Bordeaux 3rd Edition

Chateau Figeac, 1985

St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe A

1985 Chateau Figeac reviews

Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property. It has been a number of years since I last tasted the 1985 Figeac. It is forward on the nose, laden with Provençal herbs, autumn leaves and cloves, certainly more forward than the 1985 Cheval Blanc, as one example. There is a fine definition and linearity on the entry, hints of dried blood percolating through the mass of dried herbs with a slight bitterness towards the finish. On this occasion, against my expectations and indeed against form, it is the 1986 that I prefer, whereas the 1985 appears to be in graceful decline.

Fully mature, the 1985 La Lagune has a dark plum color and a sweet nose of plums, cherries, and licorice intermixed with some toasty new oak. Always open-knit, somewhat too obvious, but tasty, in a medium-bodied, moderately weighty style, this soft, supple-textured wine

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1985

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, Level vts, label damage

94 points Wine Journal

Reviews: " it remains a sublime Claret. The nose here has more graphite/pencil box signature, wonderful definition, the cigar box aromas then intensifying with aeration with red-berried fruit, bergamot and redcurrant. The palate is imbued with wonderful poise and elegance, not a powerful or tannic Mouton like the ’86, but still very harmonious and exuding freshness from start until finish with hints of tobacco and a hint of Lapsang Souchong lacing aftertaste. Graham's Port, 1985

Vintage Port

An exceptional Port scoring 96/100 Parker Points

Graham is a great port house, producing one of the deepest-coloured and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. It is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length.

Hooper's Port, 1985

Vintage Port

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Surprisingly opaque and purple, this port has a tightly knit but compact structure, fine depth of fruit, full body, yet seems to tail off in the finish. One of the more tannic and closed ports of this otherwise charming, precocious vintage. (1/1989)

Wine Spectator
Medium purple-ruby with fresh raspberry and chocolate aromas, full-bodied with plenty of raspberry flavors, silky medium tannins and a fresh finish. (12/1989)

Kopke Port, 1985

Colheita Port in Original Kopke box as illustrated

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Review:
The 1985 has a topaz color with glints of fiery orange. The nose of vanilla and toasted almonds leads to buttery rich caramel flavors with hints of dried strawberries, finishing with soft Columbian coffee and pink grapefruit zest.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel.

Vintage Port
Special Offer | Was 89.95 | now £64.95

"Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced...The 1985 has less of a deep-ruby/purple color, but it does offer a spice-box, fruitcake sort of aroma, mildly sweet, medium- to full-bodied flavors, and a ripe, tasty finish. Not a heavyweight, this wine represents a lighter style of vintage port. (1/ 1989) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Wine Spectator

Chateau Rieussec, 1984

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe

A very good Rieussec and one of the few decent wines produced in Bordeaux in this year. Colour rusty, deep gold. A beguiling bouquet of apricot, honey, molasses, old English Christmas cake, toffee and smoke. A beautiful texture in the mouth, weighty, viscous and satiny. Very rich, toffee, honey, treacle and poached pears and apricots. Very ripe but with sufficient acidity to hold it all together. Complex and multi-layered.
