Barolo, 1973

Serio Battista Borgogno

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Nebbiolo, 1973

Fontanafredda (Serralunga)

The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Armagnac, 1972

J. Dupeyron
Vintage Armagnac

The 1972 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask.

Mahogany-golden colour. Great complexity of sandalwood and candied fruits. The mouth is bold and smooth. Very supple attack dominated by hints of wood and then by notes of passion fruit. The finish is spectacular.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in original wooden box.

Barbaresco, 1971

New

Dogliotti Amelio e Vincenzo

This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1971

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, Level mid shoulder

Château Lafite Rothschild 1971 proves that Lafite Rothchild's wines always live up to its reputation, and it is the most consistent of first growths.

According to Jamie Goode (of wineanorak.com): "...the 1971s have consistently been undervalued. Thirty years' on, only the best of the vintage will still be at anything like their peak. But it's worth remembering that back in '71 Bordeaux wines were still made for long ageing. Yields have become considerably higher in recent years, and it's arguable that even the best properties no longer make such long-lived wines."

Reviews..
"Has an aroma like an aged Burgundy, with cherry and spice; flavor is mature, soft, very elegant.

Chateau Margaux, 1971

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

The 1971 Margaux is a complete wine, well balanced, particularly fine and subtle, but lacking power and length. The finish is soft and tender but is starting to show a little dryness. It should be enjoyed now.

The 1971 growing season was affected by very serious "coulure" in the Merlot vines. This is when bad weather prevents the flower from setting into fruit. July and August were very hot and dry, but September was rainy, which did not stop this small crop from reaching a good ripeness level. (The picking began 1st October)
