Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1955

St Estephe, 2me Cru Classe - low shoulder

An archetypal elegant, virile wine, Cos d'Estournel reveals a powerful fruitiness and superb body when it is still quite young, and then gradually evolves towards a superb aromatic complexity. A high proportion of Merlot makes the wine rich and supple; its potential to age can exceed a century in great vintages.

Graham's Port, 1955

Vintage Port

Reviews: Five Stars (Outstanding).
“One of my all-time favourite Ports...A big wine that has evolved perfectly... mature but rosy-cheeked; glorious bouquet, a fabulous fragrance erupting out of its depths. Sweet, refined, silky yet still tannic, fleshy yet firm”.Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine, Published 2002

Chateau Latour, 1952

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe - label damaged - top shoulder

"Tasted at the Ledbury 1950/1952 dinner. Although this vintage of Latour does not have a great reputation, I actually found a lot to admire here. It has an attractive bouquet, dusty black fruits at first but clearing with aeration to reveal a most floral aromatic profile: rose petals in an old antique vase, subtle wild mint notes and a touch of peppermint. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive delineation considering its age: notes of crushed strawberry, cedar, orange rind and tobacco. As with most wines from this vintage, it is austere on the finish, but this Latour has a femininity rarely found at this First Growth estate.

Taylor's Port, 1950

Special Quinta Port Vargellas

- Rare bottling!

Decant: 3 hours - Bottled by Corney & Barrow. David Guimaraens reports that this could have been a single quinta port from Vargellas but that the TFP records are unclear. Very pale, very light in colour - almost the same colour as a white colheita; maybe 10% opaque. Very little on the nose, perhaps just a touch of mace. Gentle sugary sweetness on entry; a good volume of chocolate and raisin tones on the mid-palate. Lovely aftertaste, soft and floral with modest volume and lots of heat on the finish, which eventually turns into a herb lemon grass.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1948

Pauillac Grand Cru Classe

Mature mahogany colour, a little cloudy. Plenty of glycerine, unctuous and creamy port like texture, but without the sweetness, which one could expect given that 1948 wasn’t a very ripe vintage. It kept getting better in the glass.

Croft Port, 1945

Vintage Port - Oporto Bottled - very low level approx 2/3 full - good colour Clearance £150

A much deeper colour than the ’42 as one would expect. Quite limpid for a 62-year old with a lovely, elegant nose of ginger, leather, figs, almond and black cherries in the background. Very refined with a sedate feel to it. The palate is just sublime with perfect acidity, rich and decadent for Croft and in a sense, riper than the ’35 thanks to the Indian summer? Powerful, spicy and almost decadent towards the finish with wild honey, heather, fig, raisin and liquorice. Very long – this ’45 flirts with perfection. A gorgeous ’45 port.

Chateau Latour, 1944

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (Mid- Shoulder)

Established around 1680, the Chateau Latour estate is one of the oldest of the Medoc. At the heart of the estate, the principal parcel named "L'Enclos" is 47 hectares of the oldest vines that are preciously maintained because only they are able to give birth to the "Grand Vin". The wine of Chateau Latour is an example of consistent excellence, no matter the vintage. Firm, tannic and concentrated in its youth, it needs a long cellaring to reveal all of its profoundness, strength and extraordinary richness. At perfect maturity, the wine distinguishes itself by an incredible bouquet of black currant, hazelnut and leather.

Sotherbys Massandra Collection

The wineries in Massandra were built during the reign of Czar Nicholas II. During the process, wine caves containing thousands of bottles were constructed beneath the city. This “personal wine cellar” of the Czar contained tens of thousands of bottles. These caves survived the Russian Revolution, both World Wars, the fall of Communism, and Yakov Smirnoff. In 1990, about 13,000 of these bottles – never before available in the West – were put to auction

Rioja, 1939

AGE Bodegas Unidas Siglo Saco Rosso

Madeirised, with tons of warm balsamic vinager tones along with a good dose of undergrowth and little tendrils of smoke and dried mulberry scents. It took almost half-an-hour to open up slightly, with the funky smells blowing away a little to show a light layer of dried flowers and raisins. Amazingly though, the palate was a lot fresher and more alive than the nose would have you believe. Here, silky tannins and a decent amount of acidity still held up yummy flavours of dried cherries and cranberries, with a savoury, almost salty undercurrant of loamy earth and preserved meats. The finish was still lively, almost juicy, with a slightly sandy kiss of tannins running up and down its considerable length.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1907

Sale

Malvazia (comes in original D'Oliveiras Box as illustrated)

*** 95 Points Wine Spectator ***
*** 93 Points Wine Advocate ***

"The 1907 Malvazia was magnificent when tasted on the island in April 2010, though this example does not quite reach those heady heights. It is deep amber in color. The nose is lifted and open with pressed flowers, orange blossom and a slight, rather distracting chlorine accent. The palate is rich and very spicy on the entry with expressive marmalade, orange peel and white pepper notes that build in the mouth. It shows good weight but it is lacking finesse towards the finish. It is a little unruly at 105-years of age, but packed full of flavor.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1905

Verdelho

*** 98 Points - Wine Spectator ***

"What an intense wine. Fabulous bouquet of rich, sumptuous caramel. There’s some sweetness here, but rapierlike acidity is underneath.” Wine Spectator

Madeira is made on the volcanic island of the same name, situated in the Atlantic ocean some 400 miles off the North African coast. This sub-tropical island was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese. Madeira is the Portuguese word for wood or timber.

This sweet, amber-tinged Madeira, has keen acidity and a long and mellow finish, with a certain delicacy.
