Massandra, 1937

Tavrida Black Muscat , Sothebys Massandra Collection (Includes Original Box as illustrated

Sothebys Massandra Collection

Tavrida Black Muscat 1937 wine. The Black Muscat grape variety was brought to the Crimea in the first half of the XIX century and became known under the name of Muscat Kallyaba. The wine distinguishes itself with its strikingly bright juicy ruby-garnet colour, smartly sparkled in a glass with various soft glints of ruby and beautiful precious crystal colour.

The wineries in Massandra were built during the reign of Czar Nicholas II. During the process, wine caves containing thousands of bottles were constructed beneath the city. This “personal wine cellar” of the Czar contained tens of thousands of bottles.

Niepoort Port, 1935

Colheita Port

Reviews
1935 Niepoort Colheita Port – (bottled ,,,) – exceptionally perfumed nose, on the palate this is tremendous, the balance is perfection, round mouth-feel, incredibly long…even longer than the 1937! Nice high acid keeps this so fresh. Absolutely gorgeous wine with a delicious toasted pecan finish. The wine lacks nothing…it does not get better than this. Perfection! After we tasted this, Dirk told us it is his favourite Niepoort wine, and only a handful of bottles of this remain at the winery. 100 points - Roy Hersh = FortheLoveofPort.com

Armagnac Castarede, 1934

Armagnac

This 1934 Castarede rmagnac has a shiny brown hue with a shimmering green tint. The nose is incredibly rich and elegant, with touches of spice, dry prune, orange peel and cinnamon. The spirit is well balanced and very frank in the mouth, while the tannins are soft and melted. Very spicy aromas of prune and liquorice erupt from the glass, then – after aeration – rancio and butter notes remain in the mouth: the finish is very long and rich.

This is the oldest Armagnac house where the family has traded from 1832 casks brought by carts from the Bas Armagnac region. For almost 50 years, Pont de Bordes first, then Condom will be the vital center in the Armagnac trading.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1932

Verdelho Madeira

Dark, almost coffee-like in color with a fading orange/rust rim. Wow... You can see the concentration as you swirl this in the glass; quite viscous. Very rich nose of caramel, nuts and autumnal spices. The nose was open for business and I spent quite some time taking in the bouquet before sampling it. There is weight here, but also lift. An orange peel liveliness perks up the palate on the back end. Superb length. A concentrated Verdelho (as D'Oliveira's tend to be) but this was still lively, precise and full of tension." cellar Tracker Review, 2012

Fonseca Port, 1927

Vintage Port

Review by AHB - Portforum.com "A lovely rich red colour, warm and dark; 90% opaque. Showing little on the nose, but the little it is showing is warm and fruity — and very nice. A beautiful palate, soft entry with poise and balance. The fruit is generous, sweet and ripe and still plentiful. The palate is big and rich; stunning for a port of this age. The aftertaste is amazing — so full of fruit, of rich burnt fruitcake; mouthfilling and immense. This is stunning, stunning port.".

48 hours later a 6cl sample bottle was tasted which showed even mor ecomplexity, being sweeter and rounder than the pop 'n' pour version.

Graham's Port, 1927

Vintage Port (Top shoulder)

Reviews for the 1927 Grahams Vintage port

Deep red core, gold on the rim. Really dark in colour; 80% opaque. Full and rich on the nose, mature, with espresso and nutmeg infused black cherries - and a bit of heat. Rich, immense palate; intense fruit and wonderful Christmas cake - incredible layers of flavour and complexity. Massive aftertaste, huge flavours and an intense espresso and cherry finish. Long and lingering. This an immense and astonishing port with stunning depth and complexity. 99/100. AHB The Port Forum 2012. Whitwhams bottling
