Barbaresco, 1965

Bertolino

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Baron de Lustrac, 1965

Vintage Armagnac
Includes wooden gift box

Baron de Lustrac works with a number of small producers and growers and oversees production and ageing of their spirit – this allows them full control of their Armagnac. Only the finest eaux de vie from the best terroirs are used in the production of Lustrac’s vintage Armagnacs. Once distilled the colourless spirit is aged in 420 litre oak barrels. It is here, in barrel, that the Armagnac leaches vanillins and tannins from the toasted oak which lend the spirit colour and flavour. The depth of colour and complexity of flavour increase all the time the spirit is aged in cask, the colour can range from pale straw to rich amber.

Glen Mhor, 1965

Very Rare Single Malt Whisky- Bottled in 1997 by Gordon & MacPhail

A 1965 vintage, distilled at Glen Mhor and bottled in 1997 by Gordon & MacPhail. The distillery closed in 1983 and bottles are becoming increasingly hard to find.

The stills of Glen Mhor fell silent in 1983, along with those of the neighbouring distillery Glen Albyn. It was in 1980 that Diageo acquired Glens Albyn and Mhor respectively, demolishing them both several years later to make way for a shopping centre. Glen Mhor sits more or less atop the Caledonian Canal, the 62 mile man-made waterway which cuts a course from Inverness to Corpach. The whisky distillery was Scotland’s first to install a Saladin Box, a malting device which proved thoroughly economical for quite some time.

Vintage Port

Power, dimension and character are all hallmarks of this most memorable Vintage. Even after many years, the Graham’s 1963 never fails to impress, with its superbly balanced components of fruit, tannin and elegance. This wine conveys rose-petal aromas and the flavours of concentrated and caramelised fruit are in perfect balance. A legend in the history of Port.

"What a stunning 1963 vintage port this is! The bouquet draws you in, does not drag you in with its alcohol and reveals a fresh, well defined nose with a nutty edge, hints of cigar box and allspice. The palate is beautifully balanced,

Taylor's Port, 1963

Vintage Port
Plain label | Chipped embossed capsules | Level upper shoulder

Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.

Barolo, 1962

Giuseppe Contratto Damaged Labels, Vintage Legible

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods with no problem at all.

Cotes du Rhone, 1962

Baronnie di Sabran

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king. Usually Grenache will dominate the blend (except in the north where Syrah is allowed to be top dog, but these wines are relatively few) and is normally partnered with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre but a further 18 varieties are also permitted! A cheerful example might be light, soft, fruity and easy-drinking, while the finest examples may be full-bodied, concentrated, intense, spicy and ageworthy. But what they all invariably have in common is a fabulous sense of place and lashings of personality and character.

The area’s most highly regarded wines come from the Chianti Classico zone which is the heartland of the Chianti wine region – its traditional and longest-established vinicultural area. This fame is due not just to the high quality of the wines, but also to the classico zone's iconic Tuscan landscape and wine making traditions. This Chianti is characterised by its red and black cherry character, intermingled with notes of wild herbs, mint and spice, supported by a racy acidity and mellow tannins.
