Bordeaux Region Report
The Bordeaux wine region in southwestern France is a global symbol of exceptional winemaking, shaped by its geography and maritime climate. Bordered by the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, which merge into the Gironde Estuary, the region is divided into the Left Bank, Right Bank, and Entre-Deux-Mers. Its terroir and climate provide ideal conditions for cultivating both red and white grape varieties. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon dominate red blends, with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and others adding complexity. Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle lead white wine production, spanning crisp dry whites to sweet, botrytized masterpieces like Sauternes.
Bordeaux is home to over 60 appellations and several historic classification systems, including the 1855 Classification of Médoc and Sauternes, Graves, and the dynamic Saint-Émilion system. The Left Bank is renowned for structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines from Médoc and Graves, while the Right Bank specializes in plush, Merlot-driven wines from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Entre-Deux-Mers focuses on dry white wines. Bordeaux’s wine styles range from full-bodied reds to elegant dry whites and luscious dessert wines, with each appellation offering distinct character and complexity.

I drank a lot of this in Paris when I lived there in the mid-1980s. And I had a bottle this summer as well. Always outstanding. Shows intense aromas of prune and licorice. Full, velvety and long. This is a beautiful Bordeaux. (JS, Web Only-2007)

notes on 1964 Haut Brion
"... deep garnet core with a tawny rim. A light nose, touches of smoked wood, cedar, pain grille and soot. Nice definition but the fruit is all but dispensed with. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity, nice tautness here, good depth but not complex. Fine tannins, dusty black fruit with hints of black olive towards the tobacco-tinged finish, that seems just a little sugary (chaptalized?) Certainly not a bad wine for the vintage more renowned on the Right Bank and it has held up well. Graceful and undemanding. Drink now. Tasted June 2009.
