Quinta do Noval Port, 2003

Colheita Port

In exceptional years, certain lots of wine with great ageing potential are set aside to spend their lives maturing in casks. At a given stage, we decide to bottle a part of a vintage. The rest is kept in casks where the wine will mature into new expression at a later stage. Thus, one and the same Colheita vintage can be put onto the market on 3 or 4 occasions: after 15 years, 30 years or 40 years of maturing, and in some cases even longer. All grapes come from the vineyard Quinta do Noval. Grapes from Quinta do Noval are trodden by foot to obtain the must, then during fermentation are pressed in lagares, the traditional stone vats from the Quinta.

Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port, 2003

Vintage Port

The structured, ungenerous dark ruby-colored 2003 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port offers a nose of tobacco, smoke, and black fruits. Its tannic character exhibits flavors of stones, black plums, blackberries, boysenberries, and hints of cigar box. Appealingly expressive yet firm, this wine softened slightly over a 4 day period, revealing notes of spicy molasses. It will be at its best between 2018 and 2028.

Warre's Vintage Port, 2003

Vintage Port (damaged labels)

"Black pepper, sealing wax, spices, and toast are found in the nose of the potentially exceptional 2003 Warre Vintage Port. A concentrated, backward effort, its youthful, classically ungenerous, masculine character reveals black pepper laced dark fruits. Silky-textured in its immensely endowed mid-palate, this top-flight effort displays an admirably long, tannin-filled finish. It will require serious cellaring. Projected maturity: 2030-2050." Pierre Rovan, Wine Advocate.

"The nose is marked by lifted pure blackberry, dark cherry and black olive aromas, very intense and ripe with wonderful definition and showing no signs of the summer heat.

Blandys Madeira, 2002

Sercial Colheita Madeira (H/Litre, 50cl)

Golden colour with topaz reflections. Complex and intense notes of
dried fruits, spices, and citrus aromas. Dry and fresh on the palate with along and spicy finish.

Blandy’s Sercial Colheita was aged inseasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the wine is gently heated by warm air in the lofts of the company’s south-facing lodge in Funchal. Over the years the casks are transferred from the top floor to the middle floor and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. The wine is regularly racked during the ageing process and is finally bottled when the desired balance of maturity is reached.

Chateau Batailley, 2002

Pauillac, 5th Growth Classification

Batailley is a favourite chateau of ours, producing classic claret that almost always rewards patience. Stern and unloveable in their youth, with age these wines eventually blossom into a mellow aromatically complex maturity. Just don't drink them too early!

"The ’02 Batailley has a surprisingly deep colour. The nose displays good intensity and lift with blackberry, briary, sous-bois and a touch of bay leaf, all with fine delineation if lacking some vigour. With time in the glass, there are more tar and cedar-wood aromas emerging. The palate is medium-bodied but with a sinewy entry, rounded tannins, with notes of blackberry, cedar, pencil shavings and a touch of plum.

Jancis 17.5/20
Dense, compact very Cabernet nose. Round and lively. Very brilliant fruit. Tannins on the finish. Quite a classical structure. Should age well. Pretty dry on the finish at the moment. But long. Giscours is no longer cheap, alas, though the quality has risen considerably.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 2002

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

*** 94 Points Robert Parker ***
*** 94 Points Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "A brilliant offering and a candidate for wine of the vintage, this is classic Lafite that reminded me somewhat of the 1976, although the vintage conditions were completely different. This is a medium-weight, quintessentially elegant style of Lafite with notes of lead pencil shavings/graphite along with black currants, plums, and crushed rocks/mineral. Wonderfully pure, dense, with a deep ruby/purple color and loads of fruit, definition, and a long finish, this is a brilliant, elegant Lafite Rothschild that builds incrementally in the mouth and has more power and density than it initially seems.

Chateau Margaux, 2002

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

93 Points - Robert Parker
95 Points - Wine Journal

"Performing better from bottle than at any time in cask (which of course is the objective of great winemaking, isn’t it?), this wine reveals a dense ruby/purple color in a style somewhat reminiscent of the 1988 but with more power, concentration, and volume. It has a beautifully elegant nose of black fruits intermixed with truffle, flower, and oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, dense, with wonderful precision, freshness, and a long, full-bodied finish with impressive levels of concentration. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030." Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 2002

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 93 Points Robert Parker ***

"Dense purple to the rim, this wine exhibits the classic cassis aroma that is so characteristic of Mouton. Medium to full-bodied, tannic, powerful, and cut somewhat from the 1988 mold, this is a backward, chewy, well-endowed Mouton-Rothschild that will require considerable patience from those who purchase it. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, the wine needs a good decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2005
