Montepulciano, 1998
New
d'Abruzzo, Miglianico
Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own, …

Quinta do Passadouro, 1998
Quinta do Passadouro, Vintage Port
In the nose a lot of alcohol. It has a powerful nose but it’s not very complex. Liquorice, dark fruit, dark chocolate. There is also an amaretto cookie element coming through which is quite nice.
Taste: A creamy velvet texture. At the start a lot of freshness which is followed up very quickly with a lot of alcohol that attacks the palate. Dried fruit, some liquorice, and a really nice acidity.

Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port, 1998
Vintage Port
Tasting Note:
The Quinta do Vesuvio 1998 remains slightly muted on the nose with notes of small black cherries smoke and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins the fruits having mellowed over the last few years less high-toned with attractive black olive notes inflecting the glossy black fruits. The finish is still a little broody with a smudge of alcohol denying it delineation. Drink now-2025. Tasted October 2011. Source: eRobertParker.com

Citrus and ginger are the main themes in this seamless, elegant bubbly. It picks up a mineral element on the finish, as the chalky intensity asserts itself. Lovely mouthwatering finish.

Ryst-Dupeyon Armagnac, 1997
Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle
The 1997 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.
The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905. …

Cabernet Sauvignon (I), 1997
Livio Felluga - Esperto
Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every wine-growing country in the world. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedar wood.

Chateau Cheval Blanc, 1997
St Emilion Premiere Grand Cru Classe
*** 92 Points - Robert Parker ***
reviews:
Cheval Blanc's 1997 performed well. It is neither as super-extracted nor phenomenally rich as the 1990 or 1982, but it is exotic, seductive, and opulently-textured. Yields were extremely low at this estate in 1997 (35 hectoliters per hectare), and the harvest, which began on September 8, did not finish until September 25. Because of their difficulties with the Cabernet Franc, this example of Cheval Blanc contains an atypically high proportion of Merlot. The final blend, which represents 35% of the estate's total production, consists of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc (contrast that with the more classic blend of 66% Cabernet Franc and 34% Merlot). …

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1997
St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification
Deep ruby-red color. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather and oak spice. Big, sweet and rich, with lush black cherry and black raspberry fruit already offering enticing inner-mouth flavor. Less oaky on the palate than on the nose. Just a hint of herbaceousness. Finishes subtle and quite long, with impressively even, ripe tannins but not quite the snap of the '96. A terrific effort for the vintage. Stephen Tanzer Vinous

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1997
Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***
Reviews:
"The superb 1997 Mouton-Rothschild is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. This wine reveals a sensationally flamboyant nose of black fruits, coffee, licorice, and creme de cassis. Medium-bodied, with sweet tannin, with lots of layers of flavor. It possesses good spice, an opulent texture, and remarkable length. This is a very hedonistic, open-knit Mouton that has put on considerable weight. Only 55% of the crop made it into the 1997 Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2022." Parker, Wine Advocate …

Cockburn Port, 1997
Vintage Port
Cockburn’s Vintage Ports are made both by foot treading in traditional open lagars, and in modern temperature controlled fermenters. Cockburn’s historically has declared vintages less often than other houses, selecting only those years that fit their more elegant style.
Wine Makers Notes 1997 was an excellent year in the Douro Valley. The harvest was one of the longest in living memory: at the far eastern extremities of the Upper Douro, picking began before the end of August and continued until the second week of October.
