Morellino di Scansano, 1999
Val delle Rose
This style of Sangiovese differs from its northern brethren due to the ripeness levels it can achieve in southern Tuscany. The result is a rounder and more savory style of wine. Regulations stipulate that at least 85% of the wine must be made from this variety, with the rest coming from other permitted Tuscan red grapes. Unlike many DOCGs, this wine does not require ageing and can be released in the March after the harvest, less than eight months later; logically, this wine is characterized by lively freshness and crisp character. Other traits come in the form of cherry, pomegranate, plum, leather, cedar and spice notes. …

Quinta de la Rosa, 1999
Vintage Port
La Rosa's classic house style achieved by slow maceration in traditional granite 'Lagares' has produced a wine full of luscious forward fruit with a very attractive nose and a long velvety slightly drier finish across the palate
La Rosa is a vertically integrated Quinta rising to 450 metres above sea level, boasting many hidden micro climates within its cirtilage. Where possible we vintage and mature these small 'lotes' separately in order to achieve the maximum complexity in the finished ports, which would not have been possible from a less diversely planted property.

Barbaresco, 1998
Fontanafredda
Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Barolo, 1998
Fontanafredda
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Barolo, 1998
Elio Grasso 'Vigna Chiniera' Gavarini
lio Grasso is making monumental wines with great balance and classic varietal character. Split between the worlds of new wave and traditonal Piemontese winemaking Elio has been able to fuse the two incorporating the best of both. Micro-oxygenation and large oak barrels give the wine more suppleness, more depth, smoothness without giving up the fruit or terroir of Barolo. Simply stunning wines. The Gavarini is more aromatic and ethereal

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1998
St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification
*** 88 Points - Robert Parker ***
The nose is quite smoky and dusty, with a touch of green pepper. Very masculine, as is the palate that is foursquare, with dusty tannins, cigar box and blackberry leaf. It is very Saint Estephe with its earthy finish.
"Bottled in April, 2000, this elegant, stylish, graceful wine is an attractive, dark ruby/purple-colored effort with subtle notes of sweet oak, licorice, herbs, and black fruits. While not massive, it is medium-bodied and ripe, with sweet tannin. Forty-eight percent of the production was utilized in this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. …

*** 89 Points - Parker ***
Reviews "This dense ruby/purple-colored blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot has filled out nicely during its upbringing in wood. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. Produced by the Rothschild's brilliant administrator, Charles Chevalier, Duhart Milon is a wine to watch." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 2001

Chateau Grand Pontet, 1998
St Emilion
90-91 points outstanding - Robert Parker
Reviews
"The finest Grand Pontet yet tasted, the saturated black/purple-colored 1998 offers a knock-out nose of nearly overripe blackberry fruit, kirsch liqueur, licorice, smoke, and toasty new oak. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich, with impressive equilibrium, this concentrated, deep wine will be even better after another 2-3 years of bottle age. It will last for 15-16 years. Impressive! Grand Pontet is undervalued in today's wine market, a rarity for Bordeaux." Robert Parker - eRobert Parker.

Chateau Gruaud Larose, 1998
Saint-Julien
The 1998 Gruaud Larose appears to be a potential sleeper of the vintage, and may merit an outstanding score. It is a powerful, bulky style of Gruaud-Larose, with a dark ruby/purple color, and plenty of cassis, spicy new oak, and roasted herbs in the jammy nose. On the palate, the wine has lost much of the forward precociousness it was revealing last spring, now boasting loads of tannin in its powerful, muscular flavors.

Chateau La Dominique, 1998
St Emilion
Chateau La Dominique from the excellent 1998 vintage is now at its sumptuous peak and is drinking well. It will hold for a few more years.
Reviews:
91 points Vinous
The 1998 La Dominique replicates the fine performance it showed from magnum two weeks earlier. The bouquet offers blackberry, raspberry coulis, sage and truffle on the nose, a touch of mint developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, still fresh and cohesive with black fruit, tobacco, a touch of dark chocolate with a finish you might easily mistake for a Pomerol. There is just a note of dryness and linearity on the finish, at least in the bottle, but larger formats should still give lots of pleasure. …
