Ramos Pinto, 1997

Vintage Port

93 pts Robert Parker - Intense, with a very dense colour and delicate brownish reflections, characteristic of an evolution taking place in bottle. Appetising, fresh and alluring aroma, black plum, cassis, anise and tobacco notes and a slight touch of lavender. Creamy mouth, very aromatic, cocoa, cherry and pipe tobacco. It is refreshing without being heavy, good tannin structure and a long and aromatic finish.

Sudtirol Meraner, 1997

Meraner Kellerei

The zone Alto Adige Meranese is also known under the German name, Südtirol/Südtiroler Meraner , or as South Tyrol Merano DOC, and it is located on the hills surrounding the city of Merano. The zone has been a sub-zone of Alto Adige DOC since 1993. The zone, with a wonderful view of the valley and of the Adige River to the South, includes the municipalities of Caines, Merano, Gargazzone, Lana, Marlengo, Postal, Rifiano, San Pancrazio, Scena, Tesimo and Tirolo. Alto Adige Meranese di Collina DOC produces a single red wine, but its quality is not the strong point of the region.

Ryst-Dupeyon Armagnac, 1996

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1996 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Quinta do Vesuvio never fails to impress and their 1996 Vintage Port showcases all the characteristic weight and depth of the Symingtons' best single property: The palate reveals excellent richness, layers of flavour, well-balanced tannin, and a persistent, satisfying finish. Chateau Duhart Milon Rothschild, 1996

Pauillac 4th Growth Classification

*** 92 Points Wine Advocate ****

Reviews
"The 1996 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild is aging in wonderful fashion, to wit, a straight down the fairway Pauilliac. Now at 20 years of age, it has developed a fresh and very brine-scented bouquet with plenty of undergrowth and bell pepper aromas. You could almost imagine a bit of Loire Cabernet Franc in here! The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, impressive body and backbone, likewise more than enough freshness on the structured finish laced with white pepper and bell pepper. Very classic in style, this is a Duhart for traditionalists, but I for one appreciate its style.

Chateau Leoville Poyferre, 1996

St Julien 2me Cru Classe

*** 93 Points - Robert Parker ***

"This fabulous 1996 was tasted three times from bottle, and it is unquestionably the finest wine produced by this estate since their blockbuster 1990. Medium to full-bodied, with a saturated black/purple color, the nose offers notes of cedar, jammy black fruits, smoke, truffles, and subtle new oak. In the mouth, there is impressive fruit extraction, a tannic, full-bodied structure, and a classic display of power and finesse. The longer it sat in the glass, the more impressive the wine became. Backward, and massive in terms of its extract and richness, this should prove to be a sensational Leoville-Poyferre for drinking over the next three decades.

Chateau Marquis de Terme, 1996

Margaux, 4th Growth Classification

A very tannic, structured wine with an opaque purple color and a sweet creme de cassis nose intermixed with damp earth, vanilla, and licorice, this relatively massive wine has mouth-searing levels of tannin, medium body, and a very backward style that will require considerable patience from its buyers.

Chateau Potensac, 1996

Medoc

The Chateau Potensac 1996 has plenty of cassis, leaf and cedar to begin with. The wine is fresh and gains in the glass. The fruits have a ripe, creamy edge from the vintage but the wine remains savoury and true. It has ample structure beneath the flesh and is still drinking nicely. A beautiful mature older Medoc.

Chateau Yquem, 1996

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

Reviews for Chateau Yquem 1996
Compared with the flamboyant aromatics of the 1997, Yquem's 1996 plays it closer to the vest, although there is a lot going on. Light gold with a tight but promising nose of roasted hazelnuts intermixed with creme brulee, vanilla beans, honey, orange marmalade, and peaches, this medium to full-bodied offering reveals loads of power in its restrained, measured personality. There is admirable acidity, weight, texture, and purity in this impeccably made Yquem. However, patience will be a virtue. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2060.

Score: 95+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (146), April 2003
This performed brilliantly at the Roberson's vertical, even outclassing the lauded 1997! A moderate golden hue.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1996

Malvasia

***Gold Medal-Concours Mondial Bruxelles***
*** 17/20 Jancis Robinson ***

"Ochre/walnut-skin colour. Complex mix of sweetness and bitter mocha. Very sweet and still so fresh. Like liquidised raisins and orange peel in dark caramel." Jancis Robinson

Madeira is made on the volcanic island of the same name situated in the Atlantic ocean some 400 miles off the North Africa coast. The sub-tropical island was discovered in 1419 by Portuguese word for wood or timber. In 1807, John Blandy was posted to the island as part of the British Army garrison sent to Madeira to thwart any invasion attempt by Napoleons forces.

Nobile di Montepulciano, 1996

Castelli di Grevepesa

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

Quinta de la Rosa, 1996

Vintage Port

La Rosa's classic house style achieved by slow maceration in traditional granite 'Lagares' has produced a wine full of luscious forward fruit with a very attractive nose and a long velvety slightly drier finish across the palate

La Rosa is a vertically integrated Quinta rising to 450 metres above sea level, boasting many hidden micro climates within its cirtilage. Where possible we vintage and mature these small 'lotes' separately in order to achieve the maximum complexity in the finished ports, which would not have been possible from a less diversely planted property.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1996

Vintage Port

This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.

Ruchottes-Chambertin, 1996

Grand Cru, Domaine Georges Mugneret

The 1996 Ruchottes-Chambertin sees everything come together. Like so many Grand Crus from this vintage, it is evolving at a glacial pace. But there is tremendous structure and it might simply be a case of waiting a few more years for it to dispense with a slight toughness. How much patience do you have?

Robert Parker
Displaying a medium-to-dark ruby color and violet, rose, blackberry, and blueberry-infused aromatics, this wine is highly-expressive and medium-to-full-bodied. It is structured and dense and exhibits opulent fruit. This is a rich, beautifully ripe, and concentrated wine that is filled with raspberry, cherry, and stone-like flavors that linger in its long and oak-imbued finish.

Savigny Les Beaune, 1996

Clos des Guettes Domaine Gagey, Louis Jadot

Domaine bottled under the Domaine Gagey name, this wine is from the holdings of Andre Gagey, Managing director of Louis Jadot. Like all of the Jadot domaine bottled wines, it is dense and focused. It expresses very pretty blackberry fruit notes, and lots of ripe, fine tannins. Good deep red. Cherry, licorice and leather on the nose. Juicy, leanish and penetrating, with firm fruit flavors given clarity by brisk acids. Rather elegantly styled Savigny.

Taylor's Port, 1996

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port -HALF BOTTLE 37.5 cl

Very typical Taylor's style on the nose, rather reserved, spicy and stylish fruit. Gentle, and a lovely silkiness to at the start. Fine fruit, very stylish composition. Appropriate grip and texture. Lots of tannin evident on a second taste. This is rather good. From a Port Styles tasting. 16.5-17+/20 (Wine Doctor 2007).

1995 Burmester Vintage Port

Vintage Port

The 1995 Burmester Vintage Port is an elegant wine with lovely, aromatic fruit on the nose. Hints of black-fruit, cherry, figs and roasted coffee. The Port has a dark core lightening at the edges. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a sleek, racy, long, sweet fruit finish. Outstanding 92/100. VWP tasting 01/20

In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded Burmester & Nash in London, a cereal trading company. They moved to Vila Nova de Gaia and in 1750 began shipping port wine to the British Isles and the rest of Europe. The family name originates from the German word 'Burgmeester', meaning 'mayor' - as the family came from the small north Germany city of Moelln.
