Barolo, 1999

Michele Chiarlo - Tortoniamo

Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years.

Blandys Madeira, 1999

Malmsey Colheita Madeira (H/Litre, 50cl) Includes gift box as illustrated

Blandy’s Malmsey 1999 vintage Madeira was aged for 16 years in seasoned American oak casks and as with all the family’s vintages, this wine started its ageing process in the warm high attic floors of the lodge in the centre of Funchal. Over the 16 years, the wine passed down from the warmer top floor of the Blandy’s Wine Lodges, the “Sotão de Amendoa” where it spent the first 5 years, to the second floor for 7 years and finally to the cooler first for the remaining 4 years. The art of finding the right balance between concentration and the freshness of the wine lies in the winemaker’s decision when to transfer the wine to the lower cooler north facing floors of the lodge.

Cabernet Sauvignon (I), 1999

La Gavina - Cecchi

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every wine-growing country in the world. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedar wood.

Camelot, 1999

Firrilato

An outstanding 1999 vintage red wine from Sicily.

Camelot’s elegance is the result of lengthy research, over more than 20 years, which Firriato has dedicated to guaranteeing the best climate and soil conditions for growing Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Baglio Sorìa vineyards, located at an altitude of 120 metres above sea level, with their vicinity to the Trapani coast and the uniqueness of their terroir, contribute to determining the ideal conditions for the cultivation of these two vines. The red marl in its soils allows the earth, during the hotter months, to remain compact and not crack.

Chateau Calon Segur, 1999

3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

This supple 1999 vintage Bordeaux wine from Chateau Calon-Segur is an elegant, lighter-styled Calon-Segur, particularly when compared to the 2000. It exhibits an evolved colour, sweet cherry and dusty berry fruit, and hints of dried herbs. It is a spicy, cherry-flavoured effort with a style reminiscent of a Beaune premier cru. The blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc has resulted in a wine of elegance and finesse rather than one with a lot of stuffing and power.

Chateau Palmer, 1999

Margaux 3rd Growth Classification
Magnum 150cl

Review Scores
*** 95/100 (outstanding) - parker ***
*** 17.5+/20 - Jancis Robinson ***

Robert Parker writes of this wine... "The 1999 is the greatest Palmer made since 1961, 1966, 1970, 1983, and 1989. It is one of the superstars of the vintage. The wine is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. It boasts a staggering bouquet of violets and other spring flowers intermixed with licorice, black currants, and subtle wood. Only 50% of the production made it into the grand vin. This is a multidimensional, compelling effort with both power and elegance, it offers sweet tannin along with flavors that caress the palate, and a 45-second finish.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1999

Domaine Font de Michelle, Etienne Gonnet

The 1999 Chataeuneuf du Pape wine from Etienne Gonnet is a profound, smokey, leathery nose with an intriguing aromatic note like sandalwood. Beautiful palate with a gorgeous, silky texture, and a very sweet impression. Intense, wonderfully scented Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Producer Guilllaume Gonnet produces this Châteauneuf-du-Pape from equal quantities of Grenache and Syrah, the vines farmed biodynamically and on average, between 50 and 90 years old. That age of vine leads to an especially intense, pure Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with tonnes of dark fruit aroma, touches of mixed herbs and liquorice.

Chianti Colli Senesi, 1999

Caulio - Pietraserena

The typical characteristics this Chianti exhibits are a bright ruby colour which turns to garnet with time, a fruity nose with black cherry and violets, with a more pronounced character of finesse when the wine undergoes ageing. The palate is balanced, fruity, slightly tannic which is refined over time to a soft and velvet taste.

Chianti Colli Senesi is perhaps Chianti's most significant subzone, located on the hills surrounding Siena in the southern part of the Chianti region. The title is used to cover Sangiovese-based wines from the less prestigious vineyards of the area. These wines can be forward and fruity while still exhibiting Chianti's characteristic rustic charm.

Inferno, 1999

Fratello Pollati
Clearance Offer | Last One | Was £39 | Now £17.50

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.
