Kopke Port, 1998

Vintage Port
Special Offer | Was £59.95 | Now £44.95
Includes Wooden Gift Box

"The 1998 Kopke Vintage Port has a dark core with an amber halo. On the nose there are notes of dark cherry and cinnamon which translate into the taste. Medium bodied and in good balance between the sweetness and acidity - Medium finish feels like it is at peak maturity but will hold for another decade. Impressive effort by Kopke.” 89/100 very good TC VWP 06/21

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Merlot, 1998

Defra, Col de Fratta

Merlot can also produce a delightful and intriguing pure varietal wine. While Merlot has a long history of use as a blending wine, pure Merlot wines have been relatively slow in gaining momentum in Italy. That too has changed and today some of the world’s best Merlot wines bear Italian labels. The Trentino wine is from well-positioned and carefully maintained hillside vineyards near the city of Trento in northeastern Italy.

Montepulciano, 1998

d'Abruzzo, Miglianico

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

Quinta do Passadouro, 1998

Quinta do Passadouro, Vintage Port

In the nose: A lot of alcohol. It has a powerful nose but it’s not very complex. Liquorice, dark fruit, dark chocolate. There is also an amaretto cookie element coming through which is quite nice.
Taste: A creamy velvet texture. At the start a lot of freshness which is followed up very quickly with a lot of alcohol that attacks the palate. Dried fruit, some liquorice, and a really nice acidity.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1998

Vintage Port

Tasting Note:

The Quinta do Vesuvio 1998 remains slightly muted on the nose with notes of small black cherries smoke and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins the fruits having mellowed over the last few years less high-toned with attractive black olive notes inflecting the glossy black fruits. The finish is still a little broody with a smudge of alcohol denying it delineation. Drink now-2025. Tasted October 2011. Source: eRobertParker.com

Sanford Pinot Noir, 1998

Pinot Noir, Rita Hills, Santa Barbara

Garnet red colour bricking at the edges. Garnet-brick red. Jasmine tea and scorched earth on the nose. Tart cranberry and bitter orange zest flavours. Finishes a bit hot. Nice silky texture and dusty tannins. Now fully mature, this wine would not benefit from further ageing.

Taittinger, 1998

Vintage Champagne Zao Wou-Ki Label

For his collaboration with Taittinger Champagne, Zao Wou-Ki takes us into a world which characterises his style of abstraction.

‘I paint what isn’t seen’ he said. ‘My paintings become unreadable. Still life and flowers no longer exist. I am attracted by marks which are imaginary, indecipherable’. Indecipherable maybe, but not unfathomable to those who allow themselves to be led into his mysterious abysses, sea beds, phantasmagorical grottos and skies, which are both calm and stormy, where the viewer is drawn into a feeling of complete physical freedom and weightlessness.

The bottle contains a Brut Millésimé 1998, made from Chardonnay (50 %) and Pinot Noir (50 %), taken from the best vintages.

Ryst-Dupeyon Armagnac, 1997

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1997 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Bollinger, 1997

Bollinger Grand Annee

"A blend of 63% Pinot Noir and 37% Chardonnay. The mushroom scent is predominant and then with time, a touch of rock oyster shells and orange-blossom. The palate is very elegant, less assertive on the entry, lovely citrus fruit, apple-blossom, a hint of limestone, just a little more linearity with a soft landing on the finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon (I), 1997

Livio Felluga - Esperto

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every wine-growing country in the world. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedar wood.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1997

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

Deep ruby-red color. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather and oak spice. Big, sweet and rich, with lush black cherry and black raspberry fruit already offering enticing inner-mouth flavor. Less oaky on the palate than on the nose. Just a hint of herbaceousness. Finishes subtle and quite long, with impressively even, ripe tannins but not quite the snap of the '96. A terrific effort for the vintage. Stephen Tanzer Vinous

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1997

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews:
"The superb 1997 Mouton-Rothschild is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. This wine reveals a sensationally flamboyant nose of black fruits, coffee, licorice, and creme de cassis. Medium-bodied, with sweet tannin, with lots of layers of flavor. It possesses good spice, an opulent texture, and remarkable length. This is a very hedonistic, open-knit Mouton that has put on considerable weight. Only 55% of the crop made it into the 1997 Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2022." Parker, Wine Advocate
