Chateau Milens, 1998

St Emilion Grand Cru

Rich and opulent nose full of toasty, spicy, jammy notes. On the palate the style is open and lush with a softly textured and polished feel although the tannins are surprisingly firm for a wine made by the man from Valandraud. The finish is slightly unbalanced costing the palate some of its effortless immediacy, good finish and great value.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1998

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 96 Parker Points ***

Like many of its peers, the 1998 Mouton has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black/purple-colored offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc (57% of the production was utilized), it is an extremely powerful, super-concentrated wine offering notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. It is massive, with awesome concentration, mouth-searing tannin levels, and a saturated flavor profile that grips the mouth with considerable intensity.

Chateau Rauzan-Segla, 1998

Margaux 2me Cru Classe

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Ruby-red. Penetrating, minerally aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and cedary oak. Denser and more structured than the '99; with its firmer acidity, this is more classic claret. Very rich, sharply delineated wine that will require at least seven or eight years of bottle aging. (ST) (5/2001)

90 points Wine Spectator
Dark colour, with a ripe blackberry character and hints of minerals. Medium- to full-bodied, with lovely, integrated tannins and velvety, round mouthfeel. Lovely now. (JS, Web-2009)

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1998

Chateau de Beaucastel Pierre Perrin

*** 93/100 - Robert Parker ***

"The atypically Grenache-dominated 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape is fully mature and gives up tons of kirsch, garrigue, licorice and a touch of gaminess in its full-bodied, layered and ripe personality. More rounded and sexy than most vintages, it has no hard edges, plenty of mid-palate depth and a great finish. I see no reason to delay gratification, but it will certainly hold for 5-10 years."
Wine Advocate, Jeb Dennuck - 2015

*** 18/20 Jancis Robertson ***
Scented and fresh, still showing some red fruit and a touch of vanilla. Elegant and silky. Lingers with flavours of thyme and a hint of bitter chocolate.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1998

Châteauneuf-du- Pape, Cuvée Prestige, Roger Sabon

95 points Wine Spectator
Showing more maturity than most, with colors of garnet and brick and aromas of brick dust and sandalwood. But don?t be fooled, this still has a solid core of sweet cherry, currant and brandy-soaked plum fruit, layered with sweet spice, tobacco and mineral notes that drive the structured finish. Tender for the most part, but with some latent grip, this is a lovely version of the traditional style.--1998 Châteauneuf-du-Pape retrospective. Drink now through 2022. (JM) (9/2007)

Laphoraig, 1998

New

12 Year old Single Malt The Whisky Castle Collection no 12.

A 12 year old Laphroaig distilled in 1998, matured in sherry butt #80017 and bottled in 2011 for Whisky Castle Ltd.

Laphroaig distillery is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky distillery. It is named for the area of land at the head of Loch Laphroaig on the south coast of the Isle of Islay. The meaning of the toponym is unknown, but a commonly suggested etymology includes the elements "lag" (Gaelic: hollow), "breid" (Norse: broad) and "vik" (Norse: bay), implying an original Gaelic form something like "Lag Bhròdhaig" (the hollow of Broadbay). The name may be related to a placename on the east coast of Islay, "Pròaig", again suggested as meaning "broad bay".

Percarlo, 1998

San Giusto a Rentennano

Percarlo is made from 100% estate grown Sangiovese grapes, especially selected bunch per bunch, from the best zones of our vineyards, which have a low yield of 1 Kg grapes per vine.

The grapes are usually allowed to mature beyond the normal degree of ripeness. Fermentation and maceration take place in enameled cement vats and last up to 35 days. The yeasts produced are natural.

Percarlo is aged in French oak barriques for 20-22 months, bottled unfiltered and held in bottle for another 18 months before being released. The grapes which go into the making of Percarlo are selected, bunch per bunch, from vineyards whose soil dates predominately to the Pliocene epoch.

Chateau Cheval Blanc, 1997

St Emilion Premiere Grand Cru Classe

*** 92 Points - Robert Parker ***

reviews:
Cheval Blanc's 1997 performed well. It is neither as super-extracted nor phenomenally rich as the 1990 or 1982, but it is exotic, seductive, and opulently-textured. Yields were extremely low at this estate in 1997 (35 hectoliters per hectare), and the harvest, which began on September 8, did not finish until September 25. Because of their difficulties with the Cabernet Franc, this example of Cheval Blanc contains an atypically high proportion of Merlot. The final blend, which represents 35% of the estate's total production, consists of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc (contrast that with the more classic blend of 66% Cabernet Franc and 34% Merlot).

Chateau Haut Bailly, 1997

Graves Grand Cru Classe - damaged label

The red wines of Château Haut-Bailly are considered to be amongst the best of Pessac-Léognan. Traditional vinification of the fruit of old vines gives wines that can be rather austere in their youth, but which have a marvellous ability to age. Consistently top quality and excellent value for money.

Chateau Latour, 1997

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 90 Points Robert Parker ***

"The 1997 Latour will be a surprisingly fine wine, as well as one of the longest lived offerings of the vintage. It possesses lots of tannin and depth, along with medium to full body, and a textured, multidimensional personality. Sweet, jammy fruit is intertwined with dried herbs, coffee, and earth in this saturated ruby/purple-colored wine. The finish lasts for 20 seconds, a positive sign for a 1997. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 1999

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1997

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews:
"The superb 1997 Mouton-Rothschild is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. This wine reveals a sensationally flamboyant nose of black fruits, coffee, licorice, and creme de cassis. Medium-bodied, with sweet tannin, with lots of layers of flavor. It possesses good spice, an opulent texture, and remarkable length. This is a very hedonistic, open-knit Mouton that has put on considerable weight. Only 55% of the crop made it into the 1997 Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2022." Parker, Wine Advocate

Chateau Pavie Macquin, 1997

St Emilion Grand Cru Classe

The 1997 Chateau Pavie Macquin is a terrific wine for the vintage, scoring 91 points (outstanding) in critical reviews.

Reviews
The color is opaque purple/black, and the nose offers up celestial aromas of black raspberries, cassis, and mineral notes that are reminiscent of wines from the renowned Pomerol estate, Lafleur, or, more recently, the prodigiously perfect 1990 Beausejour-Duffau. The 1997 reveals exceptional old wine intensity, and more structure than many wines of the vintage, but the tannin is sweet and silky. Full-bodied, with layers of extract, an unctuous texture, and a finish that lasts for 40+ seconds, this is a profoundly great wine from a good vintage.
