Fonseca Port, 1934
Vintage Port, DOC Douro Excellent Level
The house of Fonseca traces its origins to the early nineteenth century. The first evidence of the firm trading in Port is an entry dated 8th April, 1815, in the ledgers of the Real Companhia Velha, the royal monopoly company. This records the purchase of 32 pipes of Port by the firm’s founder, João dos Santos Fonseca. His first documented sale occurred on 14th September, 1815, followed in 1816 by his first overseas shipment.
Fonseca Ports are known for their intense and complex aromatics. A 1934 Fonseca will likely offer aromas of dried fruits (such as figs and dates), nuts (like almonds and walnuts), and spices. …

Vintage Port
Fonseca's, Vintage Port 1934
Bottled by Hatch, Mansfield and Co. .
Provenance: Christies Sale Raby Castle
Fonseca’s 1934 stands out as an exceptional wine from a split vintage spanning 1934 and 1935. Bottled by Hatch & Mansfield, this is an extremely rare Port, with even the library stock in the Fonseca lodge being very limited.
Still with a deep red core, the wine offers a reserved and refined character, revealing dark chocolate intensity on the nose and a fuller, more textured palate. It exudes lively elegance and freshness, with a subtle hint of salinity adding complexity. Beautifully defined soft berry fruit is perfectly balanced by fine, linear tannins, while a cherry stone freshness lingers gracefully on the finish. …

Sandeman, 1934
Sandeman 1934, DOC Douro Mellor & Son- English bottled.
Reviews:
"Deep orange with a brown hue. Treacle and floral perfume on the nose, incredibly dense and intense albeit a little smelly. Dark brown sugar on the palate, with plums and damsons; dense and full-bodied. Deep flavoured aftertaste, big and burly and with an intense finish. Very impressive port."

Sandeman, 1934
Sandeman 1934, DOC Douro Neck label Bottled in 1936 by Findlater, Mackie & Co Ltd, Hove
It all started in 1790 when the 25-year-old son of a Scottish prosperous cabinetmaker asked for a 300£ loan from his father to set up as a wine merchant in London.
This ambitious young man was George Sandeman, the founder of Sandeman, who ended up establishing one of the world’s leading Port and Sherry wine businesses.
From early on Sandeman specialised in these two great Iberian fortified wines and, following a usual practice in those days, began trading not from own offices but from Tom’s Coffee house, on Birchin Lane, London. Business was agreed on a ‘gentleman’s word’ and George soon gained an impeccable reputation, characteristic of The House of Sandeman to today. …

Massandra, 1931
Livadia White Muscat (Includes Original Box as illustrated)
Fortified Sweet Wine
Sotherbys Massandra Collection
The wineries in Massandra were built during the reign of Czar Nicholas II. During the process, wine caves containing thousands of bottles were constructed beneath the city. This “personal wine cellar” of the Czar contained tens of thousands of bottles. These caves survived the Russian Revolution, both World Wars, the fall of Communism, and Yakov Smirnoff. In 1990, about 13,000 of these bottles – never before available in the West – were put to auction
