Description
Spada, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, 2016 – Veneto, Italy
Vintage & Background
The 2016 vintage in Valpolicella was an excellent year, marked by a long, balanced growing season that allowed for perfect ripening and intense flavour concentration. Spada’s Amarone is produced from hand-harvested Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella grapes, which are traditionally dried (appassimento) for several months before fermentation. This labour-intensive method yields a wine of remarkable depth, richness, and structure — a benchmark expression of Amarone from one of Veneto’s most respected family producers.
Appearance & Nose
Deep garnet-red in colour with brick highlights. The bouquet is generous and complex, unfolding layers of dried cherry, plum, and fig alongside notes of cocoa, sweet tobacco, cedarwood, and warm spice. Subtle hints of balsamic, dried herbs, and leather emerge with air, adding depth and elegance.
Palate & Texture
Full-bodied and opulent, the palate is richly textured with velvety tannins and superb balance. Intense flavours of dried fruit, black cherry compote, dark chocolate, and roasted coffee are lifted by lively acidity and fine spice. The finish is long, warming, and harmonious, with lingering notes of bittersweet cocoa and dried fruit.
Serving & Pairing
Decant for 1–2 hours and serve at around 18°C. Outstanding with braised beef, venison, aged cheeses, or porcini risotto — or simply savoured on its own as a contemplative wine.
