    Taittinger Collection Matta 1992

    Vintage & Collection Background
The 1992 vintage was selected by Taittinger for its prestigious Collection Series, where great harvests are paired with unique artist-designed bottles. This edition bears the work of the Chilean surrealist Roberto Matta, whose bold, abstract imagery gives the release both visual and cultural significance. The wine inside is a Brut Millésimé Champagne, produced only in exceptional years and showcasing the house’s Grand Cru vineyards.

    Blend & Style
The Matta 1992 is crafted from a balanced blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir. The Chardonnay, drawn largely from the Côte des Blancs, contributes finesse and minerality, while the Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne lends depth and structure. Aged for several years on the lees before release, it combines freshness with the complexity of extended maturation.

    Appearance & Nose
In the glass, the wine shows a pale gold colour with glints of amber and a fine, persistent mousse. The nose is elegant yet mature, offering citrus zest and orchard fruits alongside aromas of brioche, honey, and toasted nuts. With time, richer notes emerge: dried fruit, roasted coffee, and subtle earthiness that hint at its age and development.

    Palate
On the palate the Champagne is full yet refined, with a creamy mousse that carries flavours of ripe apple, pear, and stone fruits. Secondary notes of pastry, roasted nuts, and a touch of spice add depth, while a chalky minerality and crisp acidity bring balance. The finish is long, persistent, and slightly savoury, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and maturity.

    Maturity & Food Pairing
At over 30 years old, the Matta 1992 is now fully mature, displaying the tertiary complexity prized by Champagne collectors. It pairs beautifully with dishes that echo its richness and depth — such as salmon or tuna, roasted poultry, or aged cheeses. It is equally captivating as a contemplative wine enjoyed on its own.

    Verdict
Taittinger Collection Matta 1992 is both a fine Champagne and a collectible art piece. It showcases the house’s hallmark elegance, layered with the richness of age, while Roberto Matta’s striking design elevates the bottle into an object of cultural value. For those who appreciate mature prestige cuvées, this is a memorable and rewarding experience.

    THe Artist
As the years went by, Matta’s work, influenced for a long time by the violence and oppression that sadly marked this era, became subdued and more poetic.

These are some of the characteristics found on the design he created in his homage to Champagne. Matta leads the design with poppies, a well-known symbol of war remembrance and painted them on an ochre background. These flowers represent a need for nostalgia, yet a spirit of continuation all the same. Calligraphic marks, reminiscent of the famous ‘automatic writing’ of the surrealists, run across the design.

The bottle contains a Brut Millésimé 1992, made from a combination of Chardonnay (50 %) and Pinot Noir (50 %).

In 1992, the ripening period was affected by the weather, which was to be desired at times. However, thanks to a sunny period at the end of August and the start of September, everything fell nicely into place. The character of the 1992 wines are in line with previous great vintages. The grapes had matured well and had given the wine a full-bodied and aromatic strength. Acidity was at a good level, creating an overall balance and vibrancy. The taste is moreish and long-lasting, with the sophisticated combination of lemon and floral notes.

Amongst Champagne's luxury cuveés and super-premium labels, Taittinger's wines live on one extreme end of the style spectrum.
While many top Champagnes can be quite difficult to approach in their youth, with laser-like focus and delineation, even austerity, Taittinger instead tends to be immediately open and welcoming. These are beautiful, delicious Champagnes, with bubbles lazily winding their way up to the surface, inviting you to take another sip.
