1994 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port: A 1994 Vintage Port makes a great 25 year old wine gift for a 25th birthday or anniversary: 1994 was one of the greatest vintages of the 20th Century that produced classic, monumental port wines with rich fruit character. While these wines can be approached in their youth, the best need 20 years in bottle, making them mature for drinking now or perfect to age for another 20 years. Our wine buyer highly recommends the 1994 Taylor's Vintage Port , an outstanding Vintage Port that scored an incredible 100 points from Wine Spectator and 97 from Robert Parker.

Italian: In Tuscany, the Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile and Brunello had a very good year with a warm early Spring. The good weather conditions carried through to the harvest season with healthy, ripe fruit. In Piedmont prolonged rain caused serious problems, however a few producers still made good Barolo and Barbaresco wines.

Bordeaux: The 1994 vintage is generally rated as good but a little inconsistent. The top estates produced some very fine wines that are far superior to those in the poor years between 1991 and 1993. The best 1994 Bordeaux wines are characterised by high tannin levels with rich fruit and should mature well over the next few years.

Spain: This was the ‘Aaah!’ vintage; after three years of drought and indifferent quality, nature relented and provided one of the best vintages of the century (compared by many producers with the legendary 1964). The grapes showed tremendous ripeness, colour and extract. This was a truly great vintage in the making, although (or perhaps because) it was relatively low in quantity.

Chateau Beychevelle, 1994

St Julien 4me Cru Classe

Beychevelle is on the rebound as evidenced by what they have accomplished over recent years. This light to medium-weight wine exhibits a dark ruby color, and a straightforward, redcurrant-scented nose with toast and earth in the background. Low acidity, high tannin, and sweet fruit result in a good impression.

Chateau Cheval Blanc, 1994

St Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe

Robert Parker writes of this wine... "Dark ruby/purple-coloured, with a complex, spicy, tobacco, vanilla, blackcurrant, mineral, and floral-scented nose, the 1994 is a bigger, more structured wine than the 1993, its older sibling, but is it better? The wine finishes with mouthsearing tannin, which detracts from the otherwise impressive aromatics and sweet, medium-bodied, lush attack. As I have written many times in the past, Cheval Blanc has a tendency to fatten up, put on weight, and expand both aromatically and texturally with age, so perhaps this wine will move in that direction. If it does, my rating will appear unduly conservative.

Chateau d'Armailhac, 1994

Pauillac, 5th Growth classification

Tasting notes

Made in an attractive, more muscular style, the 1994 displays a dark ruby/purple color, spicy, meaty, curranty aromas with a touch of cedar and earth, moderate tannin, and good flesh and structure. It may develop into an upper eighty point wine if the tannin melts away without a loss of fruit.

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, 1994

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification - scuffed labels

*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***

"Grand-Puy-Lacoste is the drinker's Pauillac. It is not an investment wine (having been largely forgotten by the trophy hunters and investors looking to make a quick buck), although certain vintages (1982 and 1990) have tripled in price. Grand-Puy-Lacoste, usually loaded with character and personality, has enjoyed three fine vintages in 1993-95, with each of these years under-priced for such quality. The 1994 has turned out to be an outstanding effort for this estate. The wine reveals even more flesh than it did prior to bottling, as well as the high tannin that marks many of this vintage's wines.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1994

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 92 Points Robert Parker ***

Reviews
"This is one of the surprise sleeper wines of the vintage which has more successes than many people suspect in spite of all the rain. The tremendous drainage enjoyed by the Haut Brion vineyard worked in its favor during this wet September harvest. The color is deep plum/ruby with a bit of lightening at the edge. Notes of compost, truffle, earth, spice box, dried herbs, and licorice compete with sweet black cherry and currant fruit. The wine is medium-bodied, with a relatively plump, chewy feel to it. It is certainly one of the top half dozen or so wines of the vintage.

Margaux, 4th Growth Classification

The successful 1994 exhibits an intense, dark purple colour, sweet, spicy, cedary, jammy aromas, classic, medium to full-bodied, tannic, backward flavors, and excellent length and overall purity. This may be the largest-framed, most concentrated Prieure-Lichine made in the past 30 years.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1994

La Crau Domaine Vieux Telegraph Brunier

*** 92 Points - Average Cellar Tracker Score ***

"This is well into its drinking window and had plenty to give. Decanted for 2 hours, it held up well in the glass and had a nose of dried herbs and pepper with a lovely hint of brett, and sweet fruit with a tangy, peppery note on the palate, and a hint of tannin on the finish. Not improving but should be enjoyable for a few more years." Cellar Tracker

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe has been run by our family, the Brunier family, for six generations since 1891 and is now one of the most renowned estates of the Southern Rhône. The estate’s vineyards are large as there are about 45 hectares of red grapevines planted, 60 years old is the average age.

Croft Port, 1994

Vintage Port

"The 1994 Croft exhibits an impressive dark ruby/purple color, and a developed, forward, more evolved style than expected. It is moderately sweet, full-bodied, expansive, pure, and rich, but made in an up-front, flattering style. Although outstanding, it is not one of the superstars of the vintage. It will keep for twenty years. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020". 90 points. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.

Madeira is made on the volcanic island of the same name situated in the Atlantic ocean some 400 miles off the North African coast. The sub-tropical island was discovered in 1419 and named for the word for wood or timber.

This sweet, amber-tinged Madeira, has keen acidity and a long and mellow finish, with a certain delicacy.

Offley Vintage Port, 1994

Vintage Port

The 1994 Offley Vintage Port has a beautiful light brick color. The nose is warm, intense and pervasive, with a lot of roasted almonds, black cherry and dark chocolate. 94 Points (outstanding) Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "This has an ethereal nose, nice lift with secondary aromas beginning to come through, with blackberry leaf, dried orange peel, a touch of walnut and honey. Expressive, if a little too open-knit. There is a hint of glue just in the background but it does not get in the way. The palate is very well balance, quite suave with very fine tannins, with subtle hints of cloves, dried herbs and a touch of capsicum with elegant very supple finish. Excellent. Drink now-2035." Sekt, 1994

Knipser - Pinot Rosè Brut Nature

The winery Knipser from Laumersheim in the Palatinate is an outstanding German winery. The critics of the Gault Millau count the Palatine Knipser with the highest rating of 5 stars even the world's top. The special thing about Knipser wine is the consistently high quality: whether red or white, under the direction of Volker, Werner and Stephan Knipser, great wines are constantly being produced. It was first the Knipser red wine, by which the winery from the Palatinate became famous in the 90s. A proven way of the winery Knipser it is also to offer wines until the ripe for sale. Partially, the wine in Laumersheim stored for years in the winery, before it is brought to maturity at the best maturity.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1994

Vintage Port

An outstanding port scoring 94 points (Robert Parker)

"One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-coloured wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, liquorice-scented and flavoured raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port." Parker Wine Advocate 1996.

Chateau Latour, 1994

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

This is an interesting as well as great vintage for Latour. As indicated in my barrel tasting report, Latour's 1994 possesses an atypically high percentage of Merlot (27%) in the final blend. Because of this, the wine appears to have a sweeter, more fleshy texture than is typical for a young Latour, but do not make the mistake of thinking this will be a commercially-styled, easy to drink wine. It exhibits an opaque dark ruby/purple color, and a backward, intense textbook nose of walnut and cassis scents complemented by smoky pain grille notes that build in the glass. This full-bodied, powerful, layered Latour reveals high tannin, but no bitterness or astringency.

Chateau Montrose, 1994

St Estephe Second Grand Cru classé

*** 91 Points Outstanding - Robert Parker ***

Montrose has been one of Bordeaux's most consistently successful chateaux since 1989. An opaque purple color suggests a wine of considerable intensity. One of the most successful 1994s of the northern Medoc, the wine's closed aromatics offer jammy black fruits, plums, spice, and earth. On the palate, there is impressive extract, purity, and copious amounts of sweet blackcurrant fruit nicely balanced by moderate yet ripe tannin. Medium-bodied, with excellent to outstanding concentration, this impressive Montrose should be close to full maturity with another 4-5 years of cellaring.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1994

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 91 Points - Robert Parker ***

The 1994 appears to be the finest Mouton-Rothschild made following the 1986 and before the 1995's conception. The wine exhibits a dense, saturated purple color, followed by a classic Mouton nose of sweet black fruits intermingled with smoke, pain grillee, spice, and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, with outstanding concentration, a layered feel, plenty of tannin, and rich, concentrated fruit, this wine is similar to the fine 1988. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. By the way, the Dutch artist, Appel, has created a gorgeous label for the 1994. Although Mouton-Rothschild can be among the most inconsistent first-growths,
