The 1995 vintage in Sauternes experienced favorable conditions for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). A warm and dry autumn provided the perfect environment for concentration of sugars and flavor compounds in the grapes. A warm to hot vintage ideal for producing outstanding reds does not necessarily make for a great Sauternes vintage, but in the case of 1990 it did. Dry, warm winds in the autumn contributed to the level of concentration that this wine exhibits. Fortunately, a little rain in late September and early October ensured that botrytis flourished well in the end, the final factor necessary to achieve this extraordinary expression.

Situated along the southern slopes of the Zemplén Mountains, Tokaj is characterized by late springs and short growing seasons. The average temperatures are generally cool, with long, sunny summers and dry autumns. Tokaj’s soil is largely clay or loess with a volcanic substratum; vines are approximately 20 years old. The meeting of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in Tokaj creates a mist similar to that of the fog in Sauternes. The high residual sugar concentration give these wines great ageing properties - we tasted this bottle over two days. Served chilled from the fridge after a 2 hour decant. The colour is a mid-amber with green tinge around the rim of the glass. Oxidative notes on the nose, burnt molasses apricots, apple jam, tertiary notes and fruits. A year with a wet spring and cooler-than-average weather until July. Heavy rain fell in mid-September, followed by three weeks of dry weather and two small windows of opportunity around the 20th of October that were taken advantage of to pick most of the crop. The ensuing four weeks of rain ruined the remaining grapes. A small production for this discreet, medium-sweet vintage of Yquem.

A good wine. On the nose, bthere is some orange marmalade, honey and spice character in this wine. Turns quite woody, with lots of caramel.

YQUEM NOTES: It was very cold from April to September which dashed hopes for good ripeness. The deluge in late September (100 mm in 8 days) was very worrying, but things changed all of a sudden. The rain stopped and it was finally warm. There were two fine passes from the 3rd to the 12th of October and a third from the 16th to the 20th, however it was difficult to find grapes with high enough sugar levels. …
