Bordeaux Region Report
The Bordeaux wine region in southwestern France is a global symbol of exceptional winemaking, shaped by its geography and maritime climate. Bordered by the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, which merge into the Gironde Estuary, the region is divided into the Left Bank, Right Bank, and Entre-Deux-Mers. Its terroir and climate provide ideal conditions for cultivating both red and white grape varieties. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon dominate red blends, with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and others adding complexity. Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle lead white wine production, spanning crisp dry whites to sweet, botrytized masterpieces like Sauternes.
Bordeaux is home to over 60 appellations and several historic classification systems, including the 1855 Classification of Médoc and Sauternes, Graves, and the dynamic Saint-Émilion system. The Left Bank is renowned for structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines from Médoc and Graves, while the Right Bank specializes in plush, Merlot-driven wines from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Entre-Deux-Mers focuses on dry white wines. Bordeaux’s wine styles range from full-bodied reds to elegant dry whites and luscious dessert wines, with each appellation offering distinct character and complexity.

Chateau Palmer, 1947
Margaux 3rd Growth Classification
95 Points cellar tracker review.
" It takes 15-20 minutes to open up this 69-year old beauty. Opulent and warm nose with light flower and prefume. The palate rested with clean and clear cherry, mints and sweet. Medium finishing given the age. It showed its best around 55-75 minutes after the bottle opened, and faded quickly after with alcoholic taste." Review on cellar tracker posted 2016.
An icon of the Margaux appellation, immediately recognisable by its midnight blue label and its inimitable velvet taste, Château Palmer has illustrated itself, over the course of its history, by a sound obsession: to carry its wines further on in their expression of the nuances of a great terroir. …

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1942
Pauillac Grand Cru Classe, Bordeaux
Mature mahogany colour, a little cloudy. Plenty of glycerine, unctuous and creamy port like texture, but without the sweetness, which one could expect given that 1948 wasn’t a very ripe vintage. It kept getting better in the glass.

Chateau Coutet, 1913
Barsac, Premier Cru Classe
1947 Chateau Coutet tasting note from Cellar Tracker. "If the nose on the 1947 Coutet is promising, then the palate over-delivers with the most fresh rough cut Seville orange marmalade, macadamia, toffee, cooked shiitake, Marsala, and unsmoked cigar. Chateau Latour, 2002
Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
*** 96 Points - Robert Parker ***
Special Offer | Was £545 | Now £465
The wine of the vintage? There are only 10,000 cases of this extraordinarily rich, dense 2002 that is as powerful as the 2003 (even the alcohol levels are nearly the same, 12.85%) . It is dark ruby/purple to the rim, with notes of English walnuts, crushed rocks, black currants, and forest floor, dense, full-bodied, and opulent, yet classic with spectacular aromatics, marvelous purity, and a full-bodied finish that lasts just over 50+ seconds. Huge richness and the sweetness of the tannin are somewhat deceptive as this wine seems set for a long life. Administrator Frederic Engerer seems to be more pleased with what Latour achieved in 2002 than in any other recent vintage. …

Chateau Pichon-Longueville, Baron, 1996
Pauillac, 2nd Growth Classification
*** 94 Points, The Wine Advocate ***
The 1996 Pichon-Longueville Baron has a deep garnet core with some bricking on the rim. The nose is fragrant and generous with more red fruit than black, cedar and tobacco, fine definition, perhaps a little rustic in keeping with the winemaking at the time, but certainly giving lots of pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin -- a cohesive Pauillac with plenty of depth and fine balance. The acidity lends this plenty of freshness and it does not shortchange you with plenty of tarry, cedary fruit. You come away with the impression that this Pichon Baron is going to continue to improve although I would not burn anyone at the stake for opening it now. …
