RT Madeira, 1789

Vintage Madeira

Provenance from Christies.

Some early 19th century bottles are found branded Rufino Teixeira and this is relative to the RT on this bottle. Teixeira is an old Madeira family, Tristão Vaz Teixeira being one of the first to discover the Island in the 15th century (in 1419, 600 years ago!)

In January 2019 we received the following email.
"Regarding the bottle of Madeira Wine "RT 1789" on sale, would like to inform you as follows;
The wine is Sercial and the bottle was painted by my grandfather, which was a Madeira Wine exporter around the year 1910.
The RT wine comes from my great-great-grandfather and RT means "Rufino Teixeira".

Welsh Brothers Madeira, 1779

Madeira Verdelho

The oldest known Welsh Bros. Madeira. The Welsh family coat of
arms is stamped on the wax seal. Welsh Bros. established in 1794
and were the largest shipper of Madeira wine before the odium
outbreak in 1852. They were important suppliers to the Russian and
the Swedish courts. In 1893 John F. Welsh was appointed the
Russian Consul. In the second part of the 19th century, Welsh Bros.
focussed on shipping high quality bottled wines to the United States.
They were known to mature their wines in "estufas do sol" rather than
artificially heated estufas. Welsh Bros. co-founded the Madeira Wine
Company in 1913.

Blandys, 1977

Terrantez Vintage Madeira
97 Points - Wine Spectator
37.5cl Half Bottle
PLEASE ALLOW 10 DAYS FOR DELIVERY

Blandy's, a family-run winery since 1811, is renowned for its dedication to Madeira wine traditions. The Terrantez 1977 was aged for 38 years in seasoned American oak casks using the traditional canteiro method, beginning in the warm attic floors of their Funchal lodge and gradually moving to cooler levels over time. This careful ageing process has resulted in a wine of remarkable complexity and elegance.

Tasting Notes:
This distinguished 1977 vintage from Blandy’s presents a vibrant bouquet of dried citrus, roasted peach, tropical fruits, marzipan, and flan. Subtle smoky nuances, reminiscent of peat, intertwine with truffle and forest floor elements, leading to an exceptionally fresh and pure finish.

Madeira, 1948

MBV Malvesia Bott: Barbeito, Madeira
94 Points - Wine Advocate

Review" The rambunctious 1948 Malvasia has a far more resinous, fiery bouquet compared directly against the 1954. It demands a little more coaxing, but offers absorbing aromas of melted candle wax, smoked walnut, nutmeg and cumin. The palate has a lovely opening, with Schezhuan setting the tongue on fire, and then it glides towards its elegant conclusion of barley sugar, bitter orange, chocolate and lemongrass. The aftertaste is extraordinarily long, the tongue tingling a minute after the Madeira has exited. It is the kind of Madeira that needs to be kept on a leash!" Neil Martin, Wine Advocate 2012.

Blandys, 1911

Bual, Madeira

Madeira Bual is typically sweeter than Madeira Sercial or Madeira Verdelho, but not quite as intensely sweet as Malmsey. You should expect a light mahogany/copper coloured wine with aromas of maple syrup, roasted walnut notes and hints of coffee. On the palate its high acidity will create a much needed balance against the sweetness making the sugar barely noticeable. Flavours of figs, vanilla and caramel should dominate the palate and the wine should finish off long with caramelised citrus notes.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1908

Boal, Madeira

*** 94 Points Robert Parker ***

"The 1908 Boal Reserva from D’Oliveiras is an unctuous, full-bodied wine loaded with dark maple syrup, tar, leather, licorice and sweet baking spices. There is superb density here and the wine shows terrific length in an intense style. The finish is long, bright and sweet." The Wine Advocate

Madeira is made on the volcanic island of the same name, situated in the Atlantic ocean some 400 miles off the North African coast. This sub-tropical island was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese. Madeira is the Portuguese word for wood or timber.

This sweet, amber-tinged Madeira, has keen acidity and a long and mellow finish, with a certain delicacy.
