Domaine de Beaurenard

Domaine de Beaurenard is a southern Rhône wine estate with a lengthy family history. It is primarily known for its red Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines which comprise all of the allowable 13 grape varieties but is predominantly made from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
The domaine has been family-owned and operated for the last seven generations and is mentioned in records as far back as 1695, when it was known as 'Bois Renard'. This name is now given to Beaurenard's top wines – small-production Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines in both red and white expressions, made from parcels of the estate's oldest vines. …

1983 D'Oliveiras Verdelho.
Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter.

Very pale amber, dried apricots, raisins, bananas, vanilla, fantastic layers and complexity. Fresh and high acidity, again nuanced feel, refreshing, lively, intense and still manages to be refreshing, long finish.

A quietly superb ’83 from this under-sung Fladgate house, now in its sweet spot. Deep garnet fading toward tawny at the rim. The nose is lifted and complex: black cherry and damson, fig and date, orange peel and violets, with cacao, coffee bean, cedar and a gentle eucalyptus/menthol lift.

Silky and harmonious on the palate. Sweet dark-berry fruit and kirsch ride lively acidity; tannins are velvety and resolved. Layers of walnut, dark chocolate and baking spice carry into a long, tapering finish of cocoa and candied citrus.

The winter of 1982/83 was notably cold, with February bringing rare snowfall to Pinhão, a phenomenon not seen in two decades.
