The only vintage Taylor’s declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, ‘one of the most underrated vintages of the century’. Taylor’s own two great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. Both are categorised grade A - the highest possible rating. In years when Taylor’s produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port. The 1950 Chateau Climens has a lovely nose of mandarin, orange-blossom and a touch of peach, although to be honest it is not a million miles better than the ’69. A little “smudged” by alcohol. The palate has a ripe, citrus and mandarin inspired entry, vibrant palate with good depth, touches of quince and barley sugar towards the finish.

It demands a little more coaxing, but offers absorbing aromas of melted candle wax, smoked walnut, nutmeg and cumin. The palate has a lovely opening, with Schezhuan setting the tongue on fire, and then it glides towards its elegant conclusion of barley sugar, bitter orange, chocolate and lemongrass. Château Margaux 1947 is an outstandingly great wine, particularly powerful and still very fresh. The bouquet is intense and mellow, with very ripe fruit coming through. On the palate, the power of the tannins comes to the fore, leaving a slightly dry impression, which is quite typical of the wines of this generation. This type of wine was made for long ageing. It can be enjoyed now, of course, but it can be laid down without any problem for many more years.

Pale red in colour, very light centre. Sweet on the nose, bringing quince and cinammon. Sweet and beautifully elegant in the mouth. Lots of redcurrants and a wonderful complexity all over the tongue and cheeks. A long, gentle and carressing aftertaste. This is a fabulous wine and was the best wine for drinking on the night. 94/100. High shoulder

The Croft 1935 has a noticeably deep mahogany hue with light amber rim. This is the oldest Croft with vestige of fruit lingering on the nose with hints of macerated red cherry, figs, balsam and liquorice. Complex and compelling, with very good lift. The palate is simply outstanding with immense depth and complexity, beautiful sense of natural balance and harmony with spice, Manuka honey and dates. Long, seductive and irresistible, it is difficult to image exactly how port can be much better than this imperious Croft ’35. Brilliant.

From the excellent 1935 Vintage, Bottled to commemorate George V Jubilee. The port is tawny with some red in colour. Showing little on the nose, perhaps some hints of concentrated redcurrant. Smooth and concentrated on entry; full bodied and with good weight. Blossoms beautifully in the mouth, develops and grows. Explodes on the aftertaste with huge fruit flavours dominating - mature and sweet. Incredible finish! An astonishing wine. After 5½ hours in the glass this had even developed hints of tannins!

Bual, Madeira

Madeira Bual is typically sweeter than Madeira Sercial or Madeira Verdelho, but not quite as intensely sweet as Malmsey. You should expect a light mahogany/copper coloured wine with aromas of maple syrup, roasted walnut notes and hints of coffee. On the palate its high acidity will create a much needed balance against the sweetness making the sugar barely noticeable. Flavours of figs, vanilla and caramel should dominate the palate and the wine should finish off long with caramelised citrus notes.

"This brings back a fond memory of a long lost friend, Paul Napolitano from NY. He once opened this identical Port for me years ago at his home and at the time, it was the finest Colheita I had experienced, as well as the oldest. This one was bottled in 1976 or 1977. A piece is torn off the label and makes it impossible to be certain. Dark coffee color with a greenish edge. Is this Madeira? A nose of bouillon cube, scents of sea breeze and toffee, reminiscent of a Malvasia and the richness and supple spine live up to that mindset. The palate is packed with copious caramel and fig flavors along with prunes and toffee intricately woven into a neat little package. …
