Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1975

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification (BBR Bottling)

Deep garnet core with amber at the edge is followed by earthy, oaky, spicy scents, and a little fruit. Fairly hard and tannic this wine will undoubtedly keep for another 10 years.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, 1975

St Julien, 2nd Growth classification

'...the wine exhibited more ripe fruit than I had previously noticed. There is still plenty of tannin, the wine reveals a complex, earthy cedar, curranty nose with dried fruit and herb components, full body and a classic, old style personality. It displays more finesse and character than it did at a younger age. RP Bordeaux 3rd Ed.

Parker rating 87+/100 (excellent)

Chateau Margaux, 1975

Margaux,1st Growth Classification high shoulder, good label

Fron Chateau Margaux's website.
"This vintage, which was immediately acknowledged in Bordeaux as a great success, developed very slowly in bottle, especially those wines that were Cabernet Sauvignon-based. We have wondered since that time if the Cabernet had really been picked at full ripeness, in so far as the tannins had remained firm, or even hard, for so many years. It is very likely that today, such a vintage would produce a different wine, very probably as concentrated but more accessible. 1975 came after three particularly difficult years (1972, 1973 and 1974). Perhaps the potential of this vintage was overestimated through understandable enthusiasm.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1975

Paulliac 1er Cru Grand Classe (Andy Warhol label)

*** 90 Points Robert Parker ***

Reviews "This wine has finally begun to reveal some potential. It has been closed and frightfully tannic for the last decade. The wine exhibits a good dark ruby/garnet color, a sweet nose of cedar, chocolate, cassis, and spices, good ripe fruit and extraction, and a weighty, large-scaled, tannic finish. Although still unevolved, it is beginning to throw off its cloak of tannin and exhibit more complexity and balance. I remain concerned about how well the fruit will hold, but this wine will undoubtedly hit its plateau around the turn of the century. Putting it in the context of what is a largely disappointing range of Mouton-Rothchilds in the decade of the seventies,

Chateau Yquem, 1975

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

*** 98 Points - Exceptional Neil Martin ***

Reviews
"The 1975 Château d'Yquem stands as one of the towering successes of that decade and at 40 years of age, it shows no signs of losing any of its prowess. This bottle represented one of the best that I have encountered. Iridescent in color, the bouquet soars from the glass, a pyrotechnic display of quince, Clementine, honey and a touch of aszu, lending it a slight Tokaji-like personality. It is beautifully defined and intense. The palate is pure and detailed with a killer line of acidity, vibrant honeyed fruit and a mellifluous finish that is now fully expressive.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1975

La Fiole - Anselme Pere

The red wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape blossom and reach their prime between their third and fifth year, but their potential for aging is over ten years and more according to the vintage and storage conditions. Their color changes from intense garnet-purple in the early years to ruby after some cellaring. These wines are structured, with powerful and complex aromas of ripe fruit, mushrooms, truffles, underbrush, spicy notes, and wild animals.

Copertino, 1975

Barone Bacile di Castiglione - Riserva

Copertino is a DOC of the Puglia wine region in south-eastern Italy. The catchment area centers around Copertino town and stretches 10 miles (16km) north-west to Salice Salentino. The land around Copertino is dominated by vineyards and olive groves – this is Italian agriculture at its most evocative. The red wines produced under this title are robust, often quite tannic, and typically high in alcohol. They are made mostly from Negroamaro grapes, which must make up at least 70% of any blend claiming the Copertino title. Negroamaro has long been recognized as one of the grapes best suited to the terroir in the Salento peninsula, the 'heel' of Italy's 'boot'.

Dolcetto, 1975

Sylla Dogliani

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Dow's Port, 1975

Vintage Port

The 1975 Dows Vintage Port is from a vintage that has been long under-rated. I have had repeated tastings of the 75's and whilst not in the same class as the 66 or 70 vintages, nevertheless present an outstanding quality vs price buy. When you consider that recent releases retail around the £80-£90 mark and need 20 years of storage before drinking this represents a bargain. Decanted for 4 hours, the 1975 Dows is fully mature with a nice tawny colour. The recent bottles I have tasted have been very nicely developed and drinking perfectly now. Everything is very well integrated the fruit has mellowed to become a classic vintage port.
