1980 Barros Port

Colheita Port
Includes in original Barros gift box as illustrated

The Barros 1980 colheita port has a tawny colour and an reddish halo. A delicious bouquet of ripe fruit, dried figs and plums, emphasised by an attractive character of wood and spices and caramel. Fresh and velvety in the mouth with a long finish, the Barros is a port wine which has an intense character.

Having just celebrated their 100th year trading in 2013 Barros Port is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in Port. Much of their success comes from Colheita ports – old tawnies from a single year matured in cask for a minimum period of seven years. Their expertise in Colheitas has established them as the stand out producer of this style.

1980 D' Oliveiras Madeira, 1980

Boal Madeira

Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter.

Medium orange amber color with 1 millimeter clear meniscus; appealing, light coffee, almond, reminiscent of Moroccan bastilla on the nose with a hint of passion fruit; tight, silky textured, tasty, balanced, rounded, tart orange, tart passion fruit palate with a vague sense of light salt; long finish.

1980 Taylor's Port

Vintage Port

An outstanding wine scoring 91 points.

Review: "A deep, clear garnet colour. The nose is very backward, quite austere and conservative with notes of cherry and raspberry leaf, a touch of cigar box developing with aeration. It perhaps lacks a little joie-de-vivre, especially when compared to vintage in the 1970s. the palate is attractive though, with notes of raspberry, plum, white pepper, blood orange and a touch of apricot. Very good acidity, perhaps like the -55, this is a Taylor's playing it safe, unwilling to take chances and yet it is lush on the finish with its plum and briary flavours.

Amarone della Valpolicella, 1980

Scamperle

This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Different sources and different grape varieties are important to obtain well-balanced wines with the fine structure that only a few single areas in the Valpolicella zone can provide. Notes: Color: strong ruby red. Clear and transparent. Bouquet: notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. Flavor: wine with a velvety, raisiny character combined with the structure and typical stylish bitterness to give it good balance.

Bairrada, 1980

Caves Sao Joao - Reserva

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Calem Port, 1980

Quinta da Foz Vintage Port

This 1980 Vintage Port from Calem has outstanding provenance! This bottle has been stored at the Cale cellars on Porto since bottling until it was acquired by us earlier this year.

The 1980 Calem Quinta da Foz has a beautiful tawny colour indicating maturity. On the nose it has toffee, butterscotch, creme caramel and sweet candy. It is medium bodied and fully mature with jammy red fruit and raisins, again butterscotch notes and caramel which all follow through into a long lingering finish. Superb and ready for drinking now.

Chateau Margaux, 1980

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe (faded label)

Chateau Margaux's success in this vintage was acknowledged by all. They were fortunate to harvest late, well after the rains and in excellent conditions. Whilst 1980 is not a great vintage, the Margaux is supple, aromatic fine and well balanced. It has developed beyond our expectations and has become a delicate vintage that is a joy to drink.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1980

Paulliac 1er Cru Grand Classe (Very Top shoulder)

** 92 Points Neil Martin ***

Reviews
"A complete shock to everyone who tasted this blind at La Trouvaille. Tasted alongside Lynch Bages 66, a little fatter on the nose with notes of cedar and cooked meats. Good poise and freshness. The palate has good depth, smooth tannins and quite vivacious. Full of life and vigour. Where does the concentration come from? Who cares - a wine that stuck two fingers up at all its critics who have ever dismissed this wine. Lovely. Tasted February 2004." Neil Martin Wine Journal

Dolcetto d'Alba, 1980

Fratelli Gomba

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Dom Perignon, 1980

Champagne

Produced only in the finest vintages, Dom Perignon is Moet et Chandon's prestige cuvee Champagne. Usually a blend of half-and-half Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (give or take a few per cent here or there), it is rightly regarded as one of the very finest Champagnes, with the ability to age gracefully over many years. The wine is named after Pierre Perignon, the monk at the Abbey of Hautvillers who, legend has it, 'discovered Champagne' in the 17th Century and announced it was like "drinking stars".

Reviews: "Fresh and elegant, with characteristic doughy, yeasty flavors and a touch of honey and mocha.

Fonseca Port, 1980

Vintage Port

The Fonseca 1980 Vintage Port is a rich ruby colour, fading gently at the rim. Scents of spice, raisin and fruit cake. Soft, sweet and ever so slightly plump.

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age.
