Quinta do Noval, 1970
Vintage Port Unlabelled
The 1970 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is a beautiful Port in a perfect drinking window. It is graceful and complex and a wonderful gift for any 50th birthday or Anniversary. The huge nose of liquorice, smoke, jammy black-cherry and cassis fruit is followed by a wine of seamless components, all super-packed with gorgeously pure fruit, yet the wine is not heavy or overbearing. There is a real sense of elegance to this Quinta do Noval. This port is fully mature drinking perfectly and will continue to evolve for another 20 or more years.

Royal Oporto, 1970
Real Companhia Velha Vintage Port
From the outstanding 1970 vintage. The colour is more tawny than red, and fairly light. It gives the distinct impression of a very old, very mature vintage Port.
The nose gives a strong impression of honey and is followed by sweet grapes and soft red fruits. Very slightly spirity, but not so much that it interferes. This all changes after 5 hours as the honey and fruits nearly vanish and the nose became spirity.
Palate: Very soft and elegant with a very faint smokey note. There's more "sweet" to it than anything else, but it's not a pure sugary sweetness but rather the remains of a sweet fruit compote. …

Perfumed, elegant and very attractive on the nose. Lively, tannic and massively fruity in the mouth. Lots of mid-palate activity, really attractive. Dry and tannic with a strong core of acidity that just makes the mouth water uncontrollably. A big but hot aftertaste with lots of black licorice dominating a long length. Very decent sipping wine and very enjoyable.

Taylor Fladgate, 1963
Vintage Port
Unlabelled
Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.
This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. …

Warre's Vintage Port, 1961
Vintage Port (Late Bottled)
Clearance Offer | Mid Shoulder Bottle Was £395 Now £150
Excluded from our guarantee
The 1961 Warre Vintage Port, late bottled in 1965, offers a fascinating glimpse into both vintage character and traditional Port craftsmanship. Warre is one of the oldest and most respected Port houses, founded in 1670, and is known for its elegant, slightly drier house style. This bottling is an interesting piece of history, as it represents an era when some vintage Ports were matured in cask longer before bottling — a practice that gave rise to what we now know as Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Ports.
The 1961 vintage itself was a relatively small harvest, often overshadowed by the legendary 1963, but still capable of producing beautifully refined wines. …

A Historic Port from a Classic House
The 1960 Warre’s Vintage Port reflects the elegant, aromatic style for which Warre’s is renowned. Established in 1670, Warre’s has always crafted ports that emphasize finesse and complexity over raw power, making their wines especially appealing as they age. This particular bottle, with a mid-shoulder fill level, represents a well-preserved but mature example of this storied house’s work.
A Vintage That Has Matured with Grace
1960 was a very good year in the Douro, producing wines that combined ripe fruit with balanced acidity. While not as monumental as some later vintages, 1960 ports have charmed collectors and drinkers for decades with their gentle, refined evolution. …

Taylor Fladgate, 1955
Vintage Port
Taylors 1955 Vintage Port.
Review
The only vintage Taylor’s declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, ‘one of the most underrated vintages of the century’. Taylor’s own two great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. Both are categorised grade A - the highest possible rating. In years when Taylor’s produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port. In 1955 there was a heatwave at the end of April and early May. …
