Nebbiolo D'Alba, 1967

Bersano Cremosina

Nebbiolo is the grape variety behind the top-quality red wines of Piedmont, northwestern Italy, the most notable of which are Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are distinguished by their strong tannins, high acidity and distinctive scent – often described as "tar and roses". A less obvious characteristic, visible only over time, is their tendency to lose color. Within just a few years of vintage, most Nebbiolo wines begin fading from deep, violet-tinged ruby to a beautiful brick orange.

Spanna, 1967

Castello di Lozzolo - Berteletti

Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins.

1966 Croft Vintage Port, 1966

Vintage Port

A slightly deeper core compared to the ’63. The nose is very ripe with mulberry and tobacco with a hint of balsam, just lacking a little freshness and delineation. The palate is similar to the ’63, very well-balanced and cohesive, a slightly viscous texture, fresh and surfeit with joie-de-vivre and vivacity. Wild strawberry, lemongrass and fig towards the finish, this is certainly the “dark horse” of the decade and in my humble opinion, superior to the ’63. A little gem. Tasted November 2007. Rating 93 points (outstanding)

Barolo, 1966

Fontanafredda

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Barolo, 1966

Giordano
Damaged and bin soiled labels

Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years.
