Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 1961 Batailley can be astonishing if you chance upon a tip-top bottle (cf. my tasting notes back in 2007). This was a good example but not in the same class as that. It commences well on the nose, still fresh and tensile with graphite infusing the black fruit that maybe do not have as much freshness and precision as an impeccable bottle might convey. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh line of acidity, decayed red berry fruit, a touch of black cherry, cedar and truffle, with smoke toward the finish that is dense and solid.

Chateau Clerc Milon Mondon, 1961

Grand Cru Classe Pauillac

The 1961 Clerc-Milon from the legendary 1961 vintage is a classic Pauillac, with deep leather and tobacco aromas swirling around a lighter core of sweet cassis, earth and capsicum notes. The palate was completely resolved and almost seemed to melt in the mouth, with soft, barely there tannins and perfectly integrated acidity dripping through lovely, pure notes of cassis and capsicum, earth and mineral, with just a twist of black tea at the finish.

In the 18th century, Château Clerc Milon formed part of the vast estates of the seigneury of Lafite. Sold as a "national asset" in the Revolution, it was acquired in 1789 by the Clerc family, which joined its name to that of Milon, the Pauillac hamlet where the estate is located.

Dolcetto, 1961

Cremosina Reserva Speciale

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.
