Montepulciano, 1970
d'Abruzzo, Ferliga Cantine del Tronto
Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own, …

Oliena (Sardigna), 1970
Cantine Sociale Oliena
The wine cooperative of Oliena was set up in 1950 by a group of local winegrowers in order to exploit and spread the Cannonau wine. The vine, imported from Spain and cultivated also in other areas of Sardinia, found here the perfect conditions to grow thanks to a dry climate and sandy soils. The typical ‘small tree’ cultivation or ‘espalier’ does not allow high yields, yet produces a wine with unique characteristics. In 1972 the DOC Cannonau wine produced in Oliena’s territory obtained the sub-designation of ‘Nepente di Oliena’. This definition derives from Gabriele D’Annunzio’s letter where the poet, after visiting the area, wrote: ‘Don’t you know the Nepente di Oliena, not even for its fame? Alas! I am sure if you tasted it; …

Quinta do Noval Nacional
Nacional- Vintage Port
“This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.” Christian Seely
The terroir: a small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines and untouched by phylloxera, described as “attached to the soil of the Nation”. …

Ramos Pinto, 1970
Ramos Pinto Vintage Port
From the outstanding 1970 vintage, the Ramos Pinto is a beautiful port. Excellent colour with a little red. On the nose jammy strawberries, spice, a hint of pepper and liquorice. On the palate, so beautifully smooth and in great balance, red fruit some violets. A long long finish. This is a beautiful wine.
Reviews
"Mature in appearance with a wide rose rim; 60% opaque but full of fine sediment. Delicious redcurrants on the nose, mature and sweet. Rounded and sweet on the palate with lots of sweet fruit but lacking a little acidity so feeling a touch flabby. Very sweet on the late palate, with lots of parma violets which appear on and dominate the aftertaste. …

Refosco, 1970
Vinicola Udinese Riserva
The wines this grape yields can be quite powerful and tannic, with a deep violet color and a slight bitterness. On the palate, there are strong currant, wild berry and plum flavors. The wine can stand some aging (depending on variety), and after a period of four-to-ten years, it achieves a floral quality as well. Refosco should be served at 16 - 18°C . It goes best with charcuterie, game, and grilled poultry.

Royal Oporto, 1970
Vintage Port
From the outstanding 1970 vintage. The colour is more tawny than red, and fairly light. It gives the distinct impression of a very old, very mature vintage Port.
The nose gives a strong impression of honey and is followed by sweet grapes and soft red fruits. Very slightly spirity, but not so much that it interferes. This all changes after 5 hours as the honey and fruits nearly vanish and the nose became spirity.
Palate: Very soft and elegant with a very faint smokey note. There's more "sweet" to it than anything else, but it's not a pure sugary sweetness but rather the remains of a sweet fruit compote. …

Spanna, 1970
Natrella
Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins.

Taylor's Port, 1970
Vintage Port
The 1970 Taylor's Vintage Port is a consistently high performer and rated as one of the best of the 1970 ports.
99 points Wine Enthusiast
This wine's dark garnet color with minimal bricking suggests a relatively youthful wine and this certainly could age longer, although it's also delicious now. Wonderfully complex floral and herbal scents easily move into deep, rich flavors of chocolate and cherries, sprinkled with a healthy dose of Douro minerality and spice. Drink or hold. (JC) (2/2007)
